Hi! I’ve got a few questions about people’s auditions and the process afterwards. I was wondering if anybody else went to the Chicago Unifieds? If so, what was your audition like? And does anybody know when CMU will start contacting people about their acceptance (or rejection…:-/)

Hi MtGirl!
For my year I went through Chicago Unifieds! Carnegie Mellon doesn’t make any decisions until after all of the auditions are over. They will start sending out notifications in mid-March.
Break a leg!

I personally did not have the best time at my CMU audition at UNifieds. This coming from a white, short girl with an old-fashioned 40’s character look with a belt and operatic lyric soprano voice who loves to audition. At first, the people assisting with the audition seemed snobbish and stand-offish. They were not the kind, polite people that facilitated the Michigan audition. Maybe its just me, but since CMU is the only conservatory that I auditioned for, it seems like that might be part of the reason they are not so friendly.

Anyway, I liked the dance call, and had fun with that, the one positive part of the audition. However, when I went to sing for the man, he didn’t ask me to sing anything else, just the songs I prepared. That would have been all right, but the other girls who sang after me, who happened to be African-American got to sing more than the two they prepared. This also happened at the monologue audition. Ms. MAckenzie-Wood did not have me work any of my monologues with her, however, she kept sending the other girls back and forth, and one girl even was told that she would have the oppurtunity to sing again the next day for a second try.

The only reason why this peeves me is because somehow it was found out that CMU had already cast their entire freshman class before they even came to Unifieds last year or a couple of years ago. Which means that they came to Unifieds to basically collect their 75 audition payment from every auditionee.

So, I’m speculating that they may have probably already cast several white girls, and needed girls of color in their class. Which makes me mad, because I paid my audition fee, just like everyone else.

I’m a student that works/runs part of the auditions on campus, and I can tell you straight from the horses mouth, singingactress that they do not make any decisions of the class until all their auditions are over. As i’ve been informed from the faculty, that’s always how it’s been done. I’m so sorry that your experience was less than positive. The reason why I chose Carnegie Mellon was because I had the best experience with the teachers there, than any other of the 11 programs I auditioned for. I am a short white girl too, and the program usually only takes 5 girls total for the MT program.
I promise you, that you had just as fair of a shot at Unifieds, I was accepted through Unifieds, and a TON of my classmates in my year and the other years were too.
Again, i’m sorry your experience was unpleasant, and just because they did stuff with other people, doesn’t have any bearing on you. They might of seen what they needed to see from you.
I hope you’re doing well and staying warm this weekend. And I hope you get into your dream program! You’ll be stellar!

Thank you very much for your insight, CarnegieMT2012. That gives me a little hope.
I appreciate your kindness, and hope that you are staying warm as well!

Like CarnegieMT2012, my D (who is a freshman MT at CMU) auditioned at Unifieds. What we discovered from her auditions is that you never know. I remember one audition where she was in and out in about eight minutes. She walked over to me and said, “Well, that was a joke. I don’t think they even wanted me in the room!” She ended up getting into that program.

As difficult as it is, you have to try and have fun and perform your best – and then don’t over-analyze the audition. There’s only one you and you’ll end up in the right place.

My daughter did a walk-in w/ CM at the LA Unifieds and felt really good about her audition. However we are hesitant to spend any more money submitting an application because the way we read their website is that they do not give any money to transfers. Does anyone know if that is true? She is definitely interested in their program but there is no way she could go there without some big financial help.

I don’t know that you could truly know from this forum. I just don’t think there are many people here who know anyone who transferred into the BFA as there just are not that many to begin with.

In my view, you don’t know until you try and so could see what happens. Applying is not a commitment to attend. See what is offered.

Another option is to ask this question directly of the school.

You also may consider asking an old timer on this forum who hasn’t posted in about 8 months but may still be reading CC, as her D transferred into CMU several years ago. She MIGHT know.

takeitallin- I am a transfer applicant to CMU as well, and i did the early financial aid thing that you can do before it is FAFSA time just to get an estimate and they offered me grant/scholarship aid, this is not guaranteed but a ballpark quote. I also spoke to the school, as well as friends who have gone there and they said that transfers do receive financial aid either from the school itself or from the School of Drama (if they are admitted, of course). Remember, even though you are technically a transfer, you will still be a Freshman in the School of Drama. Hope this helps! Your daughter should definitely apply if she already auditioned and feels good about it, you never know!!

bcbMTfL- thanks so much for your input. I think she is going to go ahead and apply. I know she would be starting over (in MT) but they told her she may be able to go in as a sophmore which would help a little. I guess we will never know if she doesn’t apply. Good luck to you and to everyone else who is waiting to hear!

soozievt- thanks also for your help. I love reading all of the information that you have at your fingers! She is going to apply. We don’t know anyone who has transferred into this program, either, but we may try the user name you gave us, Thanks so much!

Okay - other than being asked to do a 3 monologue D was not asked to do anything unusual (no flying around the room making like a chicken) and she was not sent to other person. Does that mean ANYTHING ?

There is no way to know. And you will stress yourself trying to figure it out. There’s enough stress just waiting by the phone/computer/mailbox! Relax and good luck.
