Curious about how CMU’s MT audition goes at Unifieds. My D is scheduled in Chicago and wondering about a few things. How many students are usually scheduled during a block? From all my reading here (thank you to all posters), it sounds like the individual auditions could be long if the auditors are really engaged with the student. From your experience, do they run late? Do you typically go from one auditor to the next or are you waiting in between to be called again? Trying to juggle the crazy unified schedule and understand the process! Thanks!
Last year in NYC there were probably 75-100 auditioners in our block. The auditions ran very long and late, thankfully ours was in the afternoon and we didn’t have anything else scheduled. But I am assuming the morning block stays relatively on time as they have the afternoon group coming- I think the afternoon group started slightly late but not horribly so. You don’t automatically go right from one auditor to another. There will be waiting in the hallway/holding space to go in between auditors, and some people don’t get moved on to all the auditors.
Thanks @Stagedoormama, that’s helpful!
My D auditioned for CMU in Chicago last year. It was by far one of her favorite auditions. Barbara did a brief talk to parents/students and then the students are separated. Some sing first, some do monologues first. There is a very old wives tale that if you don’t get passed on to do your material a second time, you will not get in, but many posts have said this is not true. The truth about CMU is this: They audition probably more than any other school, no prescreen, they see a ton of kids and yet I have heard over and over they extremely nice and inviting. Last year they spent an extra day in Chicago and LA, they probably see over 1500 kids? The odds of admission are crazy so have fun!! Carnegie does not always go for that traditional MT look, sometimes they like quirky, different… ie: Josh Gad. My advice is be yourself and enjoy! My daughter LOVED singing for Gary, said it was a wonderful experience and he gave her some good notes.
It’s definitely a theme - the kids love their CMU audition. One thing to add - after my S performed his songs for Gary, Gary asked him for a song from a recent show on his resume and THAT’s the song he spent some time with him on!
Does CMU ever take walk ins?
@TellMeAStory not that I know of. Their spots fill up pretty fast.
I don’t believe CMU takes walk-ins.
Pretty sure CMU does not do walk ins.
Absolutely not – no walk ins – their spots fill quickly
