So I signed up for Chinese 1AX because I have no idea how to read or write Chinese, save for a few random words here and there. Unfortunately I guess I knew enough random words to guess things on the placement test because I got thrown into Chinese 10AX. One of the requirements is that you are able to write a 400 word essay in Chinese....I really can't do that, let alone write one sentence. The placement test was really inaccurate in terms of my skill and I think the only reason it thought I was ready for 10AX was because I understood everything in the listening section. I have no problem listening and speaking Chinese, just I can't write or read. It says that if you sign up for a class lower than your ability, they'll kick you out, and I really want to learn Chinese. I have an interview with the teacher on the 21st, I have no idea what that'll be like but I was wondering...Is it possible for me to be in Chinese 1AX still? I know I won't survive 10AX at all for a fact and that the placement test was wholly inaccurate but if there's any other CCers who took it in the past or have any knowledge on this please help me! If I get kicked out of the class I'll end up having a problem with units too so any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

Calm down! I had the same dilemma last semester. I got placed in 10x even though I skipped most of the writing. When I met Professor Liu, she looked at my essay and saw that I couldn’t write at all and said to take 1x next semester.

^ditto. Same EXACT thing happened to me last year, literally. I can listen and understand Chinese and speak moderately, but couldn’t read/write at all. The placement test still put me in 10X though (it tends to do this to prevent some native chinese speakers that try to get into the lower level classes for easy As)

Just go into the interview, and the professor will ask you to write however much you can. I think I literally wrote like 5 words (and they were mostly wrong) before the professor just told me to stop and put me into chinese 1X
