So I'm thinking about taking either Chinese 1AX or 10AX my first semester at Cal since I am a native speaker. But I haven't read or written anything in Chinese for years so my basics are kinda rusty and therefore I didn't do too well on the placement exam. My result was 1BX, which isn't offered in the fall. I check the 10AX course and it says that "Any student who enrolls in a class below his/her level will be dropped from the class." But it doesn't say anything about enrolling in class HIGHER than his/her level. Would I be able to just sign up for 10AX even though I didn't get that on the placement exam.

The placement exam is not set in stone in terms of what you can/can not take. If you paid attention during the placement exam, it probably said something about having a speaking “test” when class starts, which also factors in to whether or not the instructor will drop you (so basically whether or not you’ll be able to take the class is up to the instructor). Telebears will allow you to enroll in whatever class you want, but it is the professor that will have the final say. If he/she doesn’t think you belong in the class, you’ll be dropped. So I guess, just sign up for the class and study a little bit before the fall.

What about for someone who can speak and listen…but can barely read/write? I’m planning to sign up for 1ax.

Same here. I took that test and got 1ax, but that was getting only the listening part with English multiple choice right. The Chinese ones I just skipped because I just had no clue what the heck the writing was saying.

well i got chinese 1ay. I bombed the whole test. I couldn’t understand any of it except for the parts that sounded somewhat like cantonese

I took the test and got 10AX. I’m fairly proficient when it comes to listening, so I probably got everything on the audio part right. But I bombed the writing section. And just yesterday, I got an email from the professor saying that first-time students who are going into 10AX thru the placement test must complete 2 things. One of which is to write a 400-character essay in Chinese.

*facepalm

Well, I haven’t had formal education in Chinese since I was 5. Should I consider 1AX?

if u can’t write or read u take the 1x series

oh dudes, um, what if we signed up for the class but haven’t taken the test yet?

And right now I’m not able to log into the test…

bumper cars
