Chm 2046L

I'm finding this class to be rather difficult, and I'm considering dropping it. If I dropped it, what would the repercussions of that be? Any negative consequences? Also, is chm 2046L the last lab course for chemistry courses?

any input is much appreciated

If a W shows up on your transcript, then obviously there’s going to be negative consequences. Grads schools do not like when students drop their courses (if you’re interested in grad school). CHM 2046L is the last chem lab course for the general sequence. Of course, there’s also organic/inorganic if you have to take those courses (they include labs).

do NOT drop that course! If you are pre-ANYTHING then it is going to have adverse affects on your applications to med/pharm/dent/etc schools.

Also, you’re going to HAVE to take the class anyway (i assume it’s at least required for your major or else you wouldnt be taking it).

Last, the class is NOT hard at all. I went through it last semester and got an A (with at least ~100 points added from extra credit). All the schemes can easily be found online or be gotten from classmates, I think I still have all of the ones I used actually. There is also an INSANE amount of extra credit in the class! You can definitely escape through the class with a B if you put in the effort and dont just blow it off.

Make sure you keep ON PACE with the assignments. DO not spend the class period talking with classmates or dillydallying or worse… texting. If you have problems with part of your assignment, ask one of your classmates, or ask the TA if he’s nice enough. If you have any questions ask me.

And no it is not the last chem lab you’ll take. You still have Organic Chemistry Lab and maybe more depending on what your major is.

helloo,

I am in chm2046L as well, and i find this class overwhelming. My TA does nothing and no one seems to explain what we are actually doing which is actually scaring me.

Can someone tell me what extra credit there is? No one told me anything about the extra credit.

Also, what is a scheme or an unknown. It all seems fast paced and confusing. I am afraid that somehow everyone knows what to do except me. Please help  I’m scaring myself just thinking about chm lab. I hate it.

One or two W’s on your transcript won’t hurt anything. Just don’t make a habit of it.

Ws look better than a D or an F.

I found the lab to be laughably easy when i took it, but I’m good at independent work. I wonder if they’ve changed the lab recently? I took it a couple years ago.

I know some people could get stressed by the unknowns, which make up so much of the grade, you have to make sure you have a solid scheme. What it was is that they’d give you a bag with a mix of ions, and you would have to identify which were and were not present. This is accomplished by applying what you learned working through the labs.

When I took it, the last one or two labs were extra credit, which you could do if you worked dilligently all semester. There was also a final, which was essentially extra credit (I didn’t have to take it, as I had already secured an A).

If lab is the same way now, I’m happy to answer any specific questions you have. I probably have my schemes laying around somewhere if you REALLY need help.

A drop on the transcript can have consequences; at best you’ll have to explain yourself at some point (a few applications I’ve filled out have required me to explain any W on my transcript).

Unless you are failing, or are physically ill to the point where you cannot do the coursework, then stick it out. Yes, it’s a time crunch, but a B is doable if you eff up one unknown and an A if you don’t mess up any (or do average on all of them.) If you don’t like your TA, bug another one.

I just totally messed up my first unknown and got a 52%. Can I still get an A? I’m pretty worried at this moment. :/

Where can i find schemes online? I haven’t found any!
