i am searching for information about this course, since i am debating on whether to take it instead of chm 2046L. any info on the class would be great ! thanks ! :]

From looking at the syllabus, its seems like all the tentative list of lab experiments is from 2045 and the last lab (proteomics) is what makes it different. Even though this class gives you credit for 45L and 46L, I don’t see anything relating for 46L except maybe the chemical composition lab.

If medical school is the goal, sometimes its hard to explain the combination courses like 2047, the orgo/biochem class, and the 54L.

[CHM2054L (Brucat) Syllabus](http://www.chem.ufl.edu/~itl/2054L/s09_syl.html)

CHM 2054L Accelerated General Chemistry Laboratory
Credits: 2; Coreq: CHM 2047 or CHM 2051.

A cross-disciplinary, inquiry-based curriculum that focuses on major themes and concepts in chemistry, with an emphasis on their application in modern, quantitative life sciences research. Equivalent to CHM 2045L + CHM 2046L or CHM 2047L.

Everyone I know who took 2054L hated it so much. The location, the hours (4 hour lab is rough), and the work involved were horrible. Oh and the experiments were nothing like the ones we did in 2045L.

medical school is definitely not the goal, and i have heard so many horror stories of chm 2046L that i am freaked out to take the class [ mostly due to the unknowns] but all of the experiments and problems aren’t allowed to be done at home? i have read over the 2046 L syllabus, but it really doesn’t give enough info on the class.

is chm 2046L as bad as other people make it seem or is it actually managable and not that bad?

& any info on chm 2046 L would be great ! :]

2046L was definitely a huge step above 2045L. I remember people going to some website and they copied sample schemes a grad student made for the unknowns. Also watch out for TA’s that will shortchange you on your subjective grade. I think the grading scale ends up being pretty reasonable, and there are a couple unknowns that can be done for extra credit plus a non-compulsory final that can help your grade if you don’t do well.

I enjoyed 46L lab. It was more time consuming than 45L, but more enjoyable. What also made it easy, was that the answers for the workbook was located on the side of the chem auditorium facing Plaza of the Americas. The most difficult part is making the schemes. Luckily, I was able to get some from others who have taken the course and passed it down. The extra credit unknowns were hard, so don’t depend on them. Also for 46L I was in the lab for the entire time allotted, but in 45L I almost always left early.

They made the unknowns extra credit? Those were the “exams” when I took the class.

have you ever heard of anyone not passing 46L ? excluding things like sample contamination and things like that. i have heard that you can do okay on the unknowns and still pass the class, and i have also heard that they time the unknowns which can be pretty hard to get all the testing done in the allotted time.

Should be the same as when you took it. After you finished the required unknowns, you could do the extra credit unknown which was a compilation of everything taught in the class. At least when I took it, most weren’t able to do it because they needed all the time to just finish what was required for the class.

Oh yes, those. From the way you wrote it, I thought you meant they were all extra credit. And to gatorforlife1030 you are correct that it is very hard to fail the class. True story: I had a C or D going into the final and since the final is entirely extra credit I ended up with a B+ or A (I forget which). I’m generally a straight A student, but that class had a few things that I didn’t like about it (these will probably be applicable to 2054L as well):

1) Not enough resources. I spent quite a lot of time twiddling my thumbs waiting for somebody to use X chemical and so basically from being slow on lab 1 it could end up snowballing so that you’re an entire lab or 2 behind at the end of the semester.
2) The workbook questions were unreasonable oftentimes. The answers are posted outside the chemistry building every so often, but it is still irksome that there were questions that my TA hadn’t a clue how to answer. My advice is to stick with the answer that you think the book wants rather than an actual answer.

^ I’m not bitter :)

Joy, joy. D’s taking 2046 and 2046L spring semester. At least she has a roommate who’s already been through it. We’ll see how it goes; she AP’d 2045 so this will be her first chem.

ya, i don’t know that many people that have been through 2046L so i’m trying to get some feedback, since i was offered to take the accelerated chem lab, chm 2054L but i’m having a tough time finding information on it or people that have taken it to get opinions. : /

I know that her roommate got an A in the class, but she’s super smart. Top 10 at her high school and like my d she AP’d into the class. So, we’ll see how it goes … I know she did use the tutoring zone a lot, but then D says she thinks it’s not so much because she needs it but because she needs reassurance that she’s got it.

S was thinking about 2054L since he registered for 2051, but - and I’m just guessing here, I wouldn’t think he would get the full 2 credits for 2054L since he just completed 2045L and it is considered 2045L/2046L combined. Now, he is registered for 2051/2046L but may even drop the lab since he has 18 credits next semester and his advisor said the lab is not required for his major. S is going to speak with the chem professor before he makes a decision.

i was offered to take the 2051 class but i am just going to stick with 2046, but as for lab, i am split between 2046L and 2054L. i have registered for both, but will drop one during drop add week… does tutoring zone help you with the schemes for 2046L?

I’m also torn between these two labs. Did you find any more information about 54L? I’m leaning towards it because you can work with a partner so I think that makes things easier but I still haven’t decided.

ya i’m taking 54L. you get to work with a partner and the grading is apparently more leinent than 46L and its two credits, and if you’re a health sciences major or any major really, it would probably look better on a transcript that you took a research oriented lab than the regular mainstream lab. i know a few people who have taken it and said it was better than the 46L lab, but the class can be challenging also, but it turns out ok in the end. :]

Any updates on how 2054L is going?
