Haha that sounds awesome. Is there anything you’d change about the school?

@fyregalaxy
i’m going to apply next year (when I’m in 9th grade) to come in as a sophmore. is it hard to come in as a sophmore? academically I think I’d be ok after some getting used to, but making friends and stuff, is that hard? Because freshman year is when everyone makes their friends and I’m a bit worried that coming in so late would not be good for my social life.

I also have a few questions:

How strict is the dress code? Do they care if you tuck in your shirt or not?

Is there fighting for showers in a dorm?

How many minutes do you have to get in between each class?

If I took Biology as a 9th grader and am coming in as a 10th grader, when will I take Physics?

If I could change anything, it would be moving Choate to California This winter was particularly brutal, but if you’re used to living in the Northeast, it shouldn’t be a problem.

Coming in as a new sophomore is actually pretty easy- more than 1/3 of the form (grade) is new, so you’ll be in good company.

The dress code is alright; for boys, no hoodies/jeans and you have to wear a collared shirt (that’s pretty much it). Some teachers care about tucking in your shirt, others don’t.

There are always enough showers. You have ten minutes- more than enough time- in between classes to walk between buildings.

The science sequence usually goes Physics, Chem, and then Bio. A friend of mine took Bio in 9th grade and is now taking Physics, so it would be probably be the same for you.

Fyre, am I that friend? ;)

@zdoub99,

The school spirit is great. it’s funny because of the contrasting sort of cheering styles between Choate and Deerfield. On Deerfield Day, Choate students will be yelling and shouting and then Deerfield students will be all formal in their suits and everything and it’s really great. The last event on Deerfield Day is the football game, and that’s when everyone really goes all out. When we won, everyone ran onto the field and started jumping and screaming and singing the school song. It’s a great experience and there’s no lack of school spirit at Choate.

@ryork15,

I came in as a sophomore and I found it a bit tough to acclimate at first, but after you become a bit more grounded and find a group of friends that fit your hobbies/interests/etc., it’ll become much much easier. Kids are generally very welcoming and appreciate it when new students try to assert themselves and place themselves in a group, just don’t over do it so that you seem annoying.

How is the rooming system? Singles or doubles? Also, can you request for a dorm? I’ve heard from some of my friends that do the summer program that there are some dorms that could stand renovation.

There is a mix between single and double rooms, and I am aware that there are a few triples on campus as well. I think that at the end of the year you can request whether you want a single or a double, and if a double, who you want your roommate to be. You can choose your dorm as well.

There are some older dorms, but each dorm has its own special sort of, I guess, flavor. The older dorms tend to be much smaller, but the bonds you form with dorm mates will be much stronger than in the larger, often newer dorms, whereas in the larger dorms you’ll have more showers, larger rooms, etc.

Are you able to request a roommate when entering as a freshman (3rd form right?)?

no, you cannot pick your roommate coming in as a 3rd former

What kind of room will I get as an incoming 4th former?

You’ll probably have a double, and your roommate will definitely be a new 4th former as well. I don’t think it’s possible to request a single, but I could be wrong. You would obviously be placed in one of the dorms that house fourth formers, and I’m pretty sure which dorm you get is completely random.

I am coming for revisits next week, what is the weather like at Choate?

Went to the revisit this week! I loved the school! I think I have decided to attend as a sophomore this fall
The weather was…well, cold. Low 40s, but you’ll be indoors for most of the time anyways.

The weather is hovering around 40-50 Fahrenheit right now; definitely bring a jacket because it does tend to get windy.

Attending Choate as Class of 2014 this fall!!! :)

I also have decided to join Choates class of 2014

Congrats, Choaties!!

Son just emailed enrollment confirmation to Choate. He will be a Choatie -class of 2015. :)

I’m going to the revisit day tomorrow so we will see what happens!

Hi! I was wondering if any current student could answer some questions I have about Choate.

When will the placement tests take place?
Is it a paper or online test?

Is it difficult for new sophomores?

Will my roommate have a similar personality to mine?

If my roommate and I don’t get along, is there a way for that to be resolved?

What do you guys do on the weekends?

What are the rules for dressing up in the dining hall on Weekdays and Weekends?

Thanks!
