@brandonnnbsc…I am not a current student, but a parent of a current freshman as well as an incomming freshman to the class of 2015. I will take on the question of placement tests. Last year all of the placement tests were paper tests, but at Monday’s revisit day we were told that all but the chinese placement test would be online this year. I think current students will be able to answer the other questions better than I can, but feel free to pm me if you still need answers.

Is it difficult for new sophomores?

Coming in as a new sophomore is actually pretty easy- more than 1/3 of the form (grade) is new, so you’ll be in good company.

What are the rules for dressing up in the dining hall on Weekdays and Weekends?

On weekdays, you have to wear class dress (for guys, collared shirt, no hoodies, and no jeans); on weekends, you can wear whatever you want.

Will my roommate have a similar personality to mine?

I’m not sure if they still do this, but when I came in they asked us to describe our personalities (when we sleep, clean/messy, etc) in a survey. However, from what I noticed, they just randomly match people.

If my roommate and I don’t get along, is there a way for that to be resolved?

Yup, everyone is assigned an advisor that can help resolve conflicts, and for more serious problems, there are counselors available any time.

What do you guys do on the weekends?

Play video/computer games, go to town with friends (stock up on snacks, go out to eat, etc), chill out at the Student Activities Center (the SAC) with pool/ping pong/foosball, go to the dance on Saturday night, or do other random activities that are arranged (laser tag, student productions, etc)

How are the conditions of the fourth form girls dorms? Any recommendations?

What’s in a dorm room? Do we have to buy pillows, lamps etc?

Are you allowed to take a sixth course?

And hey Brandon! I guess you’ll be a sophomore next year at Choate? Are you on URChoate?

and yet…i’m still stuck between Andover and Choate

How are the conditions of the fourth form girls dorms? Any recommendations?

Choate has a pair (one for girls, one for guys) of really nice sophomore dorms that are nearly brand new and have just been open for a couple years. All of the dorms are well-maintained and while they might be old, they always renovate them once in a while.

What’s in a dorm room? Do we have to buy pillows, lamps etc?

Every dorm room has a closet, desk, bookcase, drawers, a side table, mattress, bed frame, trash/recycling, and a window w/shade. You’re supposed to bring everything else you want to customize your room with, although no fridges/TVs are allowed.

Are you allowed to take a sixth course?

Yup, and lots of people do. In junior and senior years, if you want to, you can also be excused from a sport for one term by taking a sixth class.

Hope that answered your questions! :)

Decisions are due in just two days; better ask some more questions quick, zdoub!

I’ve got a few more follow up questions:

Are they mostly singles or doubles? Could I request for a double?

So it would be totally normal for me to take six classes each term? There are so many courses that I want to take but there are so many requirements that take up the course load ):

And can sophomores play on the thirds team if they want to start a new sport? Because certain schools (like Lville) only let freshmen play on thirds teams.

Yes! I am on URchoate. PM me your name

swamped, do you know a Shane? he’s also a sophomore at choate

@BronxKid,

He’s actually a really good friend of mine who lives in my dorm. I’m assuming he toured you? Shane’s pretty cool; I hope you had a good time!

@tarsier,

All new students have doubles. Your roommate will also be a new student.

I know exactly how you feel. I came in as a new sophomore and there are so many courses I want to take that I know I probably won’t have the time for. It wouldn’t be feasible for you to take 6 courses every term, but certainly if you feel if you are ready to push yourself that much in order to take the courses you want to take, go for as many as you can! You also have to remember the graduation requirements you will need to take in order to receive a diploma though, so you can’t just inundate yourself with AP courses starting in your sophomore year.

The cut off for thirds sports is sophomores. The cut off for JV sports is juniors, meaning juniors can’t play on thirds and seniors can’t play on JV sports. There are also intramural sports though if you’re just starting a new sport.

@swampedwithwork

Actually, new sophomores can get singles. My brother had a single as a new sophomore and so does a friend.

@swamped
REALLY? i went inside your dorm haha. he and i come from the same program! haha small world xD tell him luis says hi

Thanks for all your help, swamped!

No way would I ever inundate myself with AP courses
I was considering starting a third language, like Spanish or French. And science electives too.

Do you guys have an MUN club? Also, how would you get into an acapella group? I’ve never sung before but I want to have a go :)

Thank you current Choate students! Revisit day was outstanding. My son turned in his forms and will be in the class of 2015.

Can anyone tell me about SRP at Choate? Thanks.

bump?

from what I’ve heard, the SRP at Choate is truly extraordinary. As if the facilities on campus weren’t enough, research can be conducted at nearby university labs, such as Yale.

Sorry guys, I was hoping someone with more experience would be able to answer the SRP question.
From what I know, you basically spend an entire summer at a university lab researching and reading/writing on a topic of your choice. I think there’s some sort of presentation or final piece of work that is required by the end of your junior year. The topics can vary, just as long as they’re science-based. There’s a very rigorous admission process, and apparently they ask some really trippy IQ questions… I had a couple friends who came back from their interview frustrated with themselves.

We do have a MUN club, with conferences each year at Harvard, Columbia, and Yale. Officers have been looking into adding an MIT conference as well.

I’m not sure about acapella groups, as I don’t sing, but I think goothebear could help you if you have questions about singing at Choate.

What is the MUN club? Can you please include details? Thanks.

hey swamped, about how many days worth of clothing should I take? (2 weeks?)

BronxKid,

2 weeks of clothing should be fine; the laundry service picks up clothes every week, or you can do it yourself in the laundry building whenever you feel like it.

Immersion,

MUN is Model United Nations- every year, they go to several conferences at colleges, where they spend an entire weekend debating international issues like climate change by pretending to be countries/organizations in the real United Nations. The Yale conference I went to was a lot of fun and was quite diverse; in my small committee of a dozen people, there were students from China and Jordan as well some less-exotic places.
