Choosing a CC in CA

Hey everyone. I currently live in NY and am looking to move out to CA very soon to attend community college with the eventual goal of transferring. I have a few colleges in mind but am not ready to declare one just yet. One thing on my mind is the following:

I suppose no one may know this for sure, but do universities take into account the 'reputation', 'status' or perhaps size of the community college involved when viewing potential transfer students, or are they pretty impartial so long as they're accredited? With USC for example, I've located the 8 or 10 colleges from which they've accepted the most transfer students, but am assuming that's due to their locations and the sheer number of students attending them.

Also, if anyone with experience has opinions or information regarding the differences of attending a smaller CC versus a larger one(as it pertains to transferring or otherwise), please speak up! Thanks.

P.S. If there are any resources that someone feels are especially legitimate and helpful in the area of reviewing and/or comparing colleges to get a better feel for what they're like, I would love to know of them. Really any bits of information and recounts of experiences are cool :).

Can I ask what it is about the Californian community colleges that appeal to you over the ones in your native state?? I am curious b/c I’m looking into CC’s myself.

Is it generally smarter to attend a community college within the same area as your target university or does it not matter much?

orangemarmalade, I think it’s good to attend a community college in the same state as you’re transferring to since you’ll become a resident and get a resident’s tuition rate.

And to OP, I’ve only been to once community college and I chose it based on location and transfer rates (Santa Monica College) but I’m considering dual enrollment at LACC as well. I’ll let you know my opinions on both but for now I think SMC is a great CC :)

Rivers Cuomo transferred from Santa Monica to Harvard. I’ve met one or two students here in New York that transferred from SMCC. That said, I don’t think colleges really think very much about size, reputation, etc. of a CC. Rather, they’re looking at your talent, potential, and your past performance.

I think you should look at the 4 year university, and choose your CC based on which colleges they have programs with.
