Choosing a Hall for 2014-2015 » HELP

Hey everyone,

I was just wondering if anyone had any advice on forming at the UW. I was looking at Hansee hall and getting a single there, but I've heard since it's the "24-hour quiet hall" it might not be best for a freshman. I mostly wanted Hansee because I want a single and Hansee singles are cheap.

Are Mercer Court/Stevens Court good for freshmen students? I loved the fact that their apartment style and you can still have a single, essentially still having "roommates" just not sharing a room. Do freshmen ever get into these or are they usually just filled with upperclassmen?

I think all the west campus dorms looked nice. I got to tour them and loved them all, but the new ones on west campus are really all doubles, correct? Although I know Lander has a number of singles.

My last thing was this (and really what I'm most curious about): do you guys recommend a single to a freshmen? What was your experience in dorming in a double or single? Is a double really necessary in your first year? I'd think it wouldn't be all that challenging to meet people in college while dorming alone. The main reason I don't think I want a double is both my sisters had triples and had horrible experiences, which shocked me since they both seem to make friends easily. Idk. Any help?

No one has any advice? I’m sure plenty of other freshmen have the same question as I do.

Hi there. I’ll walk you through the living situations and my suggestions.

Mercer/Lander are recently built. They’re REALLY nice. However, it’s kind of hard to score one of those, and they’re REALLY expensive. I’d say these are the nicest on campus, with really nice utilities and rooms. However, you can’t get a single. You live in apartments (as you know) with 3-7 other people, whom you don’t get to pick. This can be troublesome, obviously. One group of friends lives with 6 other people and they’re all slobs who play on their computers all day. Another one of my friends had a roommate from hell who he really didn’t like. However, some other friends have roommates that they’re now best friends with, so you might get lucky or you might not. These dorms smell pretty new and plastic-y but it’s really safe and nice. However, the only real view you get is of lake union and the university bridge which isn’t exactly glamorous, and the walk to campus (you’ll have to take it every day) is awful. I’d suggest these if you don’t mind spending a ton of money, and want a really nice room.

Hansee is the coolest dorm in my opinion, just because it’s like 100 years old and still has a lot of the same old architecture. It’s really cool having your own room (I have a buddy who lives there this year). However, the 24h quiet is annoying and people really get pissed about it. The first time I went I was having a normal conversation with the door open and people took time to walk down the hall and complain to us. Also, rumor has it that the “sorority rejects” always find themselves rooms there. I would suggest this if you don’t mind the quiet hours and want to be close to the east side of campus.

Haggett/McMahon/McCarty - these are the ugliest dorms. I haven’t been in haggett or mccarty so don’t take my word just yet, but I’ll let you know how McMahon is. The way they work-- you’re set up in clusters with 6 rooms I think. Each cluster gets a living room and a bathroom. You have one roommate, plus the however many others there are. These are cheaper. However, there’s a pretty bitchin’ food court at the bottom of McMahon, and these are in the best spot on campus. PLUS, the view is freaking amazing. I’d say these ones are the most bang for your buck if you’re not too worried about having a room that’s kind of a concrete cylinder and not really pretty anywhere.

Hope this helps.

@remymo‌ thank you! so a few questions if I may… Do you think a Hansee single is OK for a freshman student? I always hear that freshmen seem to think it’s hell, but I personally think I’d enjoy it. I’m more of the introverted type so a 24-hour quite rule wouldn’t bother me too much. Besides, don’t freshmen at UW get plenty of a social life besides the dorm experience with all the clubs and everything? I guess that’s just my main worry if I shoot for a Hansee single.

Also, thanks for mentioning that about Mercer court. I might just steer away from it because of that. However, putting price aside for the dorms, what do you think is the best hall to shoot for?

Oh! And if you don’t mind did you dorm in a double before? What was your experience like?

I’m an incoming freshman too, and from what I’ve seen, the West campus dorms are a lot of bang for your buck. They’re just so new  But it’s true that most of them, apart for some studio apartments, are mostly doubles and maybe triples.

Hansee seems like a cool place to stay over the summer, but I’m not sure how appealing it would be year-round. It seems like it’s really quiet there and if you want to meet new people you’ll probably have to do it elsewhere. If you visit campus, maybe you could ask your tour guide to take you there?

Good luck!

I lived in Hansee autumn quarter in temporary housing, being a “sorority reject” and I honestly really liked it. There was usually never anyone in the bathrooms when I went in and if a shower was taken, it’s super easy to go to another bathroom and it will probably be empty. There’s also a ton of tables downstairs where you can study, which I find that other north campus halls lack. I would say that if you aren’t able to make friends outside of the dorm, then I would find it pretty lonely being that most people either stayed in their room or are busy studying downstairs.

@sparklyhearts‌ do you think it would be nice year round? I know meeting people in Hansee might be difficult since it’s so quiet and what not, but I don’t think I’ll have much trouble meeting new people in clubs/dawg daze/and so on although I could be wrong :stuck_out_tongue: I just think a single is better than a double by a long shot. Where did you go after autumn quarter btw?

@sixohyess I don’t know if you’d be able to get a Hansee dorm as they go quickly. Plus, if you want any social life I’d suggest you don’t try for one. I’d only recommend it if you were a senior with a grueling schedule. You can still be an introvert in the other dorms but when you feel like branching out it will be much easier. But it’s your call.

I forgot to mention the Tree dorms, (Alder, Elm, Poplar) which are recently built as well and pretty nice. I’d probably suggest those if you don’t mind living on west campus.
