Hi. I'm wondering whether I should major in electrical engineering or computer engineering. I am person that's interested in telecommunications; more specifically last-mile technologies like fiber optics, HFC networks, DSL, and etc.

Are you still in high school or already in college? If you are still in high school, I don’t think it’s a critical question at this time. I would look for a college with both majors. Many engineering schools do not require you to declare a major freshman year and they often often a seminar with an overview of all their disciplines (I started a separate thread on that earlier today). Rutgers is one of many examples of this approach.

Even if you select a school that requires you to declare a major, many have identical first year curricula, so there is no penalty for switching if that’s what you want to do – especially for EE vs CE which are likely to have common curricula until you are an upperclassman.

yes I’m going to be a college sophomore in fall and currently thinking about switching from biomedical sciences to engineering and it’s expected that you declare a major by the end of the 2nd yr.

Go buy yourself a microcontroller, like an Arduino. Start playing with it, learn how to use it… Computer engineering is just a subset of electrical engineering- my perspective. Hence, start toying with technology now to see if you feel drawn towards engineering!
