Choosing an Honors Program

I was admitted to UMD's Honors College, but I'm having trouble picking which Honors program I want. It's pretty much between Honors Humanities and University Honors for me. I am not sure which to indicate as my top choice because although the University Honors program sounds a bit better, I really don't want to dorm in Denton. If anyone has input about either of these programs or about their assigned dorms (Wicomico, Denton, Anne Arundel), that would be great. Also, if you've got anything positive to say about other Honors programs/dorms then that's great too. Thanks!

Couple of points. Should a decision that could affect the next four years of your life be based on which freshman dorm you’re assigned? Also, it has not been decided where University Honors will be located next fall, but as of now Denton seems unlikely.

My son chose University Honors and seems to be happy with it. He lives in Denton and aside from no airconditioning in the early months, he seems to be happy. He got lucky because his room is larger than most. The people on his floor seem to hang out and study in the lounge which is air conditioned. Overall, he seems to be very happy and doesn’t mind Denton.

1) There’s really nothing wrong with Denton. I live in it now. Plus, it’s getting A/C for the fall. Even without A/C, I’m perfectly fine here.

2) There was an article in today’s Diamondback about how they’re trying to move the University Honors students to the Ellicott Community (probably Hagerstown). It’s not definite, but that just proves how you shouldn’t make a decision just based on where the dorm is. It might not even be there anymore.

My decision is not based solely upon the dorm that’s associated with either program. I like each program fairly equally and was looking for any type of information about them from current students. Also, my qualm is not with Denton but with any dorm in the high rise area of campus, as it seems kind of remote from everything.

There’s no air conditioning in Wicomico anyway. So I don’t understand why people keep bringing up air conditioning as a deciding factor.

I live in the dorm attached to Wicomico currently, but I’ve never set foot in it. I’m in Gemstone so I can’t really tell you about honors humanities or strictly the Honors program. The Honors Program on it’s own though really doesn’t offer anything that any of the other programs don’t.

You’re not remote from everything. First of all, almost all of the freshman are in the high-rise area of campus; it’s not like you’re disconnected. You’re right near Byrd Stadium for football games. The Diner is right there. Eppley (the gym) is very conveniently right there. You’re not far from Comcast Center for basketball games either. The mall is just a 10 minute walk away. Stamp is even less. At night you can take the Orange line to get around to places like Route 1.

@Bornin, I’d like to add, that if you are doing any music, then north campus is very convenient. Roll out of bed, and walk across the street to get to a practice room :)

Oh yes I can’t believe I forgot about CSPAC; good call. Even if you’re not into music/theatre, there’s a library in CSPAC that is great for studying. And it’s right across the street from Denton. I even have a class in it this semester, which is great!
