I’m an international student and am stuck between which of these 2 colleges to attend after watching numerous videos and reading many articles. I applied for engineering in both of these schools and got into their respective engineering schools. I love urban/city life a lot and thought UW all the way but realized College park is literally 10-20 minutes away from Washington so it’s more or less the same. Any guidance/information/advice from anyone that can help make this choice a little easier?
Yes, College Park Maryland is on the METRO subway line to Washington DC. Its about 25 minute ride, but easy to get there, and Washington DC has a lot of free activities and great three season weather , summer is hot. U of Maryland has a colonial style campus, very pretty! Its a very old establish east coast school with one of the best engineering programs in the nation.
UW is good too, but more rain in the three season with a nice summer. Its a watery area, Seattle with sounds, islands, and huge Lake Washington is east of Seattle and the gateway to high tech jobs in Redmond Washington.
If you have any leaning towards physics, U of Maryland is better for that subject. Meteorology is very very strong andall computational subjects are super at U of Maryland, they have a very strong interactive faculty between EE/CS/phyiscs.
I personally like U of Maryland better, but most bloggers on CC will tell you to go to Seattle.
The advantage of Washington DC, is its the power center of the USA, and close to New York City.
Seattle to me is very far away and isolated, although certainly a high tech hub. Most students love the area of Seattle
with very tall mountain peaks, and lots of hiking trails nearby.
For jobs, although I don’t know if you will have the right to work in the USA–
Maryland offers Lockheed Martin, National Institute of Standards, and hundreds of other high tech firms and government positions.
Amazon is moving into Arlington Virginia which will give U of Maryland a huge boost too, with job connections.
Seattle/Redmond WA is the home of Facebook/Oclulus, Microsoft, Boeing and others.
