Although it is after may 1 I still have not chosen a college. I have offers from University of Vermont (which I already committed to) and CU Boulder (which id rather go to). UVM offered me a lot more money and they have a more specific major for me. However I didnt get into their wellness dorm which I was looking forward to. Being closer to home, this seems like a good choice but i really wanted to be farther away and im not very excited about UVM for some reason. CU Boulder is my ideal location and they have a more generalized major. Its very far from home but I have wanted to attend for so long. (Also better skiing) and I always want things to do. I am very lucky to still have the opportunity to commit. Im also very worried about drug use in both schools. I am not a fan but I dont care of others do it as long as im not pressured. Im hoping I can fit in/find friends wherever I choose.
Since it’s past May 1st, you’re going to have to attend UVM for a year. After that one year, you can apply to CU Boulder for your sophomore year as a transfer student.
@lovepufflesxo Don’t worry about drug use. You can avoid it anywhere, if you simply put your mind to avoiding it. What major are you thinking of? I think CU and UVM are about the same level academically for some majors, but engineering is stronger at U of Colorado, as is physics and chemistry. I think if you got into U of Colorado you can call them and still attend, I bet. There is a lot of room, and often they are anxious to fill up here, in Colorado, so if you got in, just call and pay, but you will probably get a room at Williams Village just south of campus. Its a short walk and a nice place to live, with its own cafeteria down there. Williams Village was just renovated. Williams Village is not more druggy than any other CU dorm. All of them have some drug use. The RAPs have a bit less drug use, but they may be full by now. Remember, you will move off campus in Boulder after one year anyway, so the nine month freshman dorm experience will go by very quickly, so don’t get over focused on what dorm you end up at, just join some clubs, to make friends. CU has a lot of athletic, academic, and religious clubs to choose from. Enjoy!
@Coloradomama Thinking of environmental science or something along those lines. I emailed the financial office at Boulder to see if they’d match what UVM had offered me but it may be too late to get money from them?
UVM is a very good university, and has a very strong environmental science program. Burlington is also a very nice small city. I have had many fine meals and some good beers in Burlington.
I could probably say most of the same things about UC Boulder. However, I don’t see anything about UC Boulder that would justify spending significantly more money to go there compared to UVM.
Regarding distance from home: If you are living on campus, then you are in a completely different world compared to living at home even if you are only 10 minutes from where you grew up. However, if something goes wrong, then it is useful for a parent to be able to show up within a few minutes. It might also be useful to be able to go home for a long weekend, for example if you are coming off a break-up (which has been known to happen to university students). Long flights to and from university are certainly tolerable a few times per year, but there is something to be said for avoiding them.
Regarding drugs: They are going to be available at either university. However, I am confident that you can avoid them as long as you want to. I would also recommend that you avoid them. Both UVM and UC Boulder are going to provide the opportunity for significant academic challenges and you would be better of to take advantage of this while you are there.
