Choosing Majors...

I'm deciding, if sybbie, slipper or any others could chip in, what I should major in at Dartmouth. I'm stuck between Econ or Physics. I excelled at the latter in high school at the national level, but I also know that Econ is very big deal at Dartmouth. I'm sure I could do well in both disciplines, but I have a hunch that I could do better in something substantially more theoretical - Physics.

Basically though, I'd like whatever's going to give me the better opportunities after graduation.

Big brother,

I don't know how much I can help as chicky started out as a physics major. Then she wanted to do classics, then neuropsych and finally settled on religion and is now looking into joint degree programs where she can get a JD and a Masters in Theological or Religious studies after graduation (senior year comes quickly). She did the study abroad program in the major but there were many students who were not religion majors. BTW she also took econ and government courses.

When she took engineering 3 over sophomore summer she said if she knew the course was going to be so interesting she would have though about engineering (I had a shake my head moment).

Taking courses at Dartmouth is like going to a huge feast where you just want to taste everything. That's what she did, she would take a course and fall in love with it as a prospective major). she has friends who have done study abroad programs outside of their major in classics, sociology (copenhagen) , argentina, etc. One friend turned down the Econ FSP to attend Oxford this spring.

Econ along with government are 2 of the most popular majors there. D has many friends who are doing managment consulting, and IB internships in those majors and in other majors also.

This is what is great about the distribution requirements, you do have time to try out a couple of things that really interest you. Since you have time to choose a major, take a couple of econ and physics classes and see where you find your niche. In hindsight she wishes that she would have taken a language study abroad sophomore year (oh well).

I think that slipper was a history major (who did some research in anthropology).

I hope this helps.
