Hello! I was wondering if there’re any great chorus opportunities for high school students like all-district and all-state? I missed the audition for all-state this year and was looking for programs of similar caliber.
Thank you for your suggestions!
I’m not real knowledgeable on this nor do I know where you live but maybe my comments will help. My D sang with our local oratorio society at the U of MN before UG. But it was not a full program…no housing…meaning you would need to be local. Does your area have an oratorio society? In our heavily Lutheran area choir singing is big. I did google summer programs at st olaf in northfield mn and saw that they have a program which includes choir work. It includes housing too. St Olaf is well-known for its choirs and has some great faculty. You could also check schools in your area too or other schools with good choirs. I did check Lawrence too but did not see a choir opportunity there.
If you live near NYC or the NY/NJ suburbs, we love the Young People’s Chorus of NYC: ypc.org
Where do you live? If you are near a metro area, most metros have some choir that is attached to their symphony orchestra, and most of them hold auditions twice a year. Also, if you will look under your state’s MEA webstite, you might find listings there, as many metros also have community choirs which are NOT associated with the orchestra, but still do great repertoire. Another way to augment your experience is to consider a choral camp or two over the summer. These are held at universities and colleges, check out your area.
There are children’s/youth choruses in most middle to large cities. I’ve known students who have been in them in several places and really enjoyed the opportunities.
