Emeraldkity4: Why would we have “LBGT versions of SYTYCD and reality shows that are as common as the straight ones”? Homosexuals account for less than 10% of the population. Do we have as many black shows as white? Do we have enough Asian shows? What about Hindu?

The “shoved down our throats” line kinda blows my mind. Everything in our culture is so heteronormative.

I’m pretty sure most conservative Christians know not to send their kids to an ELCA school. Just like I know not to send mine to Liberty University. It’s good to have choices.

Um… quite a bit of 9th graders are having sex actually. I think it’s more common than you think. Do I like it? No, but it’s definitely happening. (Keeping in mind, 9th grade was just 10 years ago for me.)

As a same-sex, pan-aberrant, pro-anti-life-choice, evangelical, post-proto-Christian, queer-friendly, auto-ero-neuro-utero-gyno-meta-intrasexual American, I am extremely offended that this college’s orientation doesn’t even mention me or my kind. When will the hatred stop???

Rumandting, when 10% of people depicted in the media in the US (or heck, even 5%) are gay, that would be fine. Right now it is a lot lower than that. And, by your logic, then 10% of that video should have been devoted to homosexuality. Not zero percent, as you initially said you would prefer.

Last year our school had a 9th grade parent night to show the sex ed video used in our kids health class. It was pretty lightly attended – a total of maybe 8 or 9 parents for a class of 75 kids. Interestingly, there was a couple that are known to be the most conservative parents in the class (they keep their son home on National Coming Out Day, as that is promoted by the school GLBT club as a safe day to “come out”). I am not sure if they think he will come out if he attends that day or what And also a same sex couple with a daughter in the grade.

So opposite ends of the spectrum with an interest in what is being taught. And in the whole film (about 2 hours long), there was exactly ONE mention of homosexuality. And it was a boy wondering to the camera if he was gay and if that was normal. But there was nothing else… no follow up to his question or anything, no gay girls depicted either. This film is used for a three week unit. They watch sections, then do worksheets and have discussions about what they have seen. Along with some basic human reproductive biology. So, there was really almost nothing in the whole sex ed class that would be the “normal” my kid experiences. As my kid is not out at school at this time, I did not feel comfortable pointing this out to the teacher. But I have not forgotten… and if/when my kid does come out, I will be going back to that teacher to discuss this in more detail. Just to point out that they really ought to be doing a bit more than that one sentence for that 10% or so of the population. By the way, I suspect 10% is about right for our kids school.

Someday someone may find the gene(s) responsible for the expression of homosexuality. Perhaps it will be discovered that some of the most rabid antigay et al individuals will be found to have the homosexual genome that just isn’t expressed- they either lack the promoter or have something preventing its expression. Perhaps that person will discover how abnormal s/he is compared to the world population- not just those of European ancestry that dominate our current American culture. It may even be a shock to discover that Christians, of any kind, are not the majority in the world. So many possibilities. Good heavens, maybe with any luck those people will discover they have been brainwashed to believe in their wrong religious beliefs. Remember- you can’t use the thing you are trying to prove in proving it (example- you can’t use the Bible to prove the Bible is right).

Constant “overexposure” is needed until the facts become a part of normal life. How many things are so taken for granted that no one ever mentions them? When everyone generally accepts homosexuals there will be no need for “in your face” awareness. Anyone remember the race riots of the 1960’s? Being black was considered abnormal by many people and drastic measures were needed to force our society to make necessary changes.
