I was hoping to get some good ideas about the type of gifts male college students would really like. I have two sons in their junior year and one in his senior year. They all enjoy the outdoors and music. I do not like giving cash so any suggestions would be very much appreciated. I do not want to exceed $500.00 each because I have already purchased lift tickets for them to ski during the winter break. What would young men this age really enjoy?

$500 is a lot in my opinion per each son, obviously you can afford it. How about a gift card to their favorite store/etc. Amazon.com has basically everything anyone could ever need buy etc, and in the end if they can’t find anything they want they could use it for purchasing school books.

Wow… You know what I got this year? I got the money for application fees… ($200) Why are you asking us what YOUR sons want? Shouldn’t you ask them?

In all honesty, I would send them a nice card and letter. The lift tickets are more than enough.

itunes gift cards, starbucks gift cards, new pair of sneakers (or gift card to the store for a new pair of sneakers), jacket, video game, gift card to Target or similar store near campus,
purchase the most expensive book that they will need for next semester’s classes (our sons pay for their own textbooks so I’m thinking that this might be a nice gift).

Wow–$500 PLUS lift tickets so they can spend their winter break skiing is a lot. Lucky kids. My kids will be spending their winter break working so they can earn extra money to put towards their spring semester books and spending money.

Lots of underwear.

Get them netflix subscriptions.

Electric shavers (they call them body groomers) for down there

I don’t get the whole thing with gift cards. It’s just money that you can only spend in one place. Is there anybody who would honestly prefer to get a gift card rather than cash?

I would. I always end up spending my cash on food. A book or something every now and then would be cool. It’s also much more personal and makes for a more thoughtful gift.

You can also get gift cards to target, amazon, or entire shopping malls, which are much more broad.

It would have to depend on their personalities a lot. I asked for a kindle, but a lot of college-aged people don’t enjoy reading as much as I do.

If they’re musically oriented, maybe a new instrument? New guitar/amp/saxophone/etc?

If they like video games, a console?

Oh I second the netflix suggestion. I get one movie at a time, but unlimited movies per month for like $9 a month. I LOVE it. And then I have a reason to check my mail. :)

Hey there guys just so you know but not that I need to explain. Sons work when they are home during breaks. They work in the family business and contribute to their tuition. These are not spoiled kids in fact I put the posts out there because they do not ask for anything. I was just hoping for some good ideas that are not cash related.

But the way, they all attend colleges where they could download movies and music on their laptops.

I’m a senior in college. iPod nano. Digital camera (to take pictures during their ski trip!). Netflix is great too (I use mine ALL the time).

I’m telling you, the first time they shave down there with a standard razor they’re gonna really wish they had a body groomer…

I wouldn’t trust a body groomer. Don’t get them a digital cameras lol. I’ll try to be somewhat useful here, I’d say stay away from clothing and definitely not shoes, my mom always fails at that. I would say your options are electronics and gift cards.

xbox 360
ps3 slim
flat screen

and/or games

Personally, I think gift cards are worse than money. I don’t think it’s thoughtful. I think it’s an attempt at appearing to have been thoughtful. Seriously, how much thought or effort does it take to get one? None at all… The same is true with items on a list, though.

I like the shoes idea… But don’t get a gift card or give cash, and definitely don’t buy shoes you think they’d like, take them out and tell them there’s a minimum they have to spend on shoes. And be patient. Picking the perfect shoes takes time :). Personally, I like to go to multiple stores and do research online before choosing (lol). I typically have the same pair for a year or longer, though…

photo album with pictures of him and the entire family. very sweet!
