Even if they had them I can’t afford them! Eggs are $5.50 a dozen! A man scooping them up at Safeway said they were $4.19 for 18, but I couldn’t find the digital coupon and the clerk trying to help me couldn’t find it either. I put them back.
Bad news here in the arctic zone, our something-pump went out on the furnace. My BIL looked at it and said that’s what it was. There is a tiny bit of heat going into the kitchen but the thermometer read 57 degrees all day. We have a few space heaters and a gas fireplace, but I’m thankful the temps are supposed to go up tomorrow and back into the 60s next week (which is warm enough). Don’t want to have to call a plumber on Christmas.
I have to go to the dentist which is near our Costco tomorrow. Maybe I’ll see if they have them. I can afford $2.50/doz but not $5.50. Or rather I choose not to afford them.
Seattle area - hoping the worst of ice and freezing rain will miss us, but not feeling very positive about that!
I worry about my daughters and their commutes. Too many hills around here and too many drivers who don’t respect the hills when they’re icy.
I hit up the grocery store today (we did Costco earlier in the week), along with everyone else in my city. Plenty of eggs, but I can see that anyone leaving it til Saturday may end up without eggs and many other things.
Electronics are charged, as are all of the power banks, the gas fire is working, propane full on the grill. If the worst happens, we should be able to make it ok.
I’m currently in Tennessee helping my mom who fell and is in the hospital. It’s 5 degrees with a high of 12. Thankfully I brought my winter coat, hat and gloves. I’m a little more unsure of the roads because I have my mom’s car and don’t know how old her tires are.
My husband had to drive to Michigan last night as he has surgery on Monday because of this storm. He got to his mother’s last night but won’t be able to get to our house at least today as our home is under a blizzard warning.
My daughter went to visit her cousin who is having surgery today. Her flight for tomorrow was already canceled yesterday and she rescheduled but she might be at my sister’s for Christmas in NE Ohio
My son made the choice to stay home this Christmas so I think he’s fine although with all of this going on, I haven’t checked in.
There are already 30k people in the region without power this morning. Two of our friends just lost power. It’s 20° now, but it’s going to drop to 10° overnight. We bought a small heater yesterday for the garage to keep the sink pipes and the refrigerator coils out there from freezing. We always open cabinet doors under the sinks and let the faucets drip, but I’ve never had to do it during the day.
Well…we aren’t in Oz! But whew, it sure was very windy overnight (and is now 50 something degrees). I have a slate snowman sign, a merry Christmas sign, and my wreath near our front door. DH got up when the slate and sign were banging against the house and brought those inside. The wreath was halfway across the yard.
And now we are having little brownouts. Lights dimming. Etc. lovely…not.
It is just very windy and a bit rainy here in MA this morning. The forecast does say the temp is supposed to drop from 55 degrees at 3 PM to 15 degrees by midnight.
My mom lives with us, but was visiting my brother in Oklahoma last week (where she broke her ankle even before it got icy). She was scheduled to fly home through Chicago yesterday evening, but got worried because the forecasts were predicting the potential for lots of canceled flights in Chicago. She didn’t want to end up stuck with a broken ankle in the airport, or having to scramble to catch a rebooked flight from Chicago to Boston. So, she delayed her flight home to next week and will miss Christmas with us. My brother is in an efficiency apartment and doesn’t have room for her and had made other plans for Christmas, so she says she will just spend the extra days in her hotel room.
It turns out she probably made a good decision, though. Her original Tulsa to Chicago flight happened as scheduled, but her Chicago to Boston flight was canceled at the last minute.
In Nashville we have crossed from -1 to +1 in last hour. Power outage for about 3 hours early this morning, but got power back a little after 7:30. Thinking of those who have to get out to go to essential jobs (particularly electrical folks who prevented more than just minor inconvenience with outage resolved) and hoping those without homes have found a warm place. Hope all across the CC community will stay safe and warm in these next few days!
My 89 yr. old mother lives in MN and was supposed to fly in Thursday night. We were able to change her flight to Wed night. She claims she sat on the runway for over 3 hours until they cancelled the flight. Spirit never reported the cancellation and customer service told us plane landed. D went in to the airport searching for her, and even had her paged. I felt bad about changing her flight until I learned that last night’s Spirit flight never took off, either. We really need to make all her future reservations, so we can avoid that airline.
So upset; we just had a work crew in our yard laying fiberoptic lines guessing they’re Spectrum subs. I can’t imagine allowing non-essential crews to work in this weather. Not sure if they volunteered for the shift, but I kept asking if I could get them anything
Wind is gusting to 60 mph and it’s pouring rain. Glad I went to the store late last night! Everyone else had the same idea and it was more crowded than I’ve ever seen it that time of day.
Our power went off for awhile but it came back on, surprisingly. DH and I finished a big work project last night so we will just enjoy the long weekend. Our daughter is spending Saturday and Sunday with us.
Everyone’s fine, but yesterday’s highlight was witnessing a city bus slide into a Lexus SUV, spin it 180 degrees, get caught on it, and drag it to the curb. The bus and Lexus ended up nearly perpendicular to the road, and blocked almost the whole thing. With the blizzard and negative temps piled on top, we had quite the little situation in front of the store. Of course we dropped whatever we were doing and gawked.
Last night we got down to -12 with a -36 wind chill. Felt like home – a proper winter’s eve. (northern Wisc)
We ended up with just a couple of inches of snow though hard to really tell cause it’s just a frigid blustery mess out there. Another good thing was it seems that we also didn’t get the flash freeze (ice) that was expected. With all that the winds are blizzard force and the current actual temp is -4 with wind chill -33. My good boy who really relies on a walk to do his business did his business PROMPTLY and I was so happy!!!
Crossing finger for power to hold through the day.
S and DIL made it in just before 2am and we headed for bed at 2:20am. They said the mountains were miserable with fog, snow, slush, and trucks racing each other uphill and changing lanes without caring where other vehicles were. Once they got out of the mountains all went well. I’ll be off the board and enjoying the next few days with them - perhaps checking in on a lull or something (like now).
Today we have the wind, but it’s currently sunny. Sometime early this morning we were woken up by a really bad storm, but I was too tired to check the time. Radar shows it’s still heading our way.
I don’t think VA gets as cold as other places, but it’s cold for here. Back home the wind chill is supposed to be -10 or so soon. I grew up where it relatively commonly got to -30 below without the wind chill at least once or twice per year so cold is relative. My most memorable “cold” experience was walking home from school when the wind chill was supposedly -70 or so. It would have been back in 1984 or 1985 based upon my grade in school. I was frozen before I left school grounds and it was so tempting to knock on any door at any house to see if I could warm up a bit along the way. I didn’t, but it took a long time to warm up when I reached my mom’s house 9 blocks away from school. If there’s a pro to the story, it gave me a good respect for cold.
That is exactly what I did… drained and insulated spigots, utility heater in the garage for exposed pipes, dripped faucets and opened cabinet doors, brought firewood up to the porch to stay dry and for easy access, gas logs and grill ready to go in a pinch.
All you peeps who are used to below freezing weather probably think we’re overreacting, but sustained weather below freezing is not typical in GA. Overnights, yes. 48+ hours at 20 or below, nope. I’d rather be safe than sorry. The most annoying thing is multiple mini power outages since last night (1-2 minutes).
But I’m so thankful the roads are clear and safe. I can deal with cold (18 degrees now, -1 with windchill), but not icy roads. Be safe, everyone, and enjoy your holiday!
