Oh my! I hope you all are back together as soon as possible.
We don’t seem to have gotten quite as much rain as predicted. Woke up to a lull in the rain this morning so I made sure to get my dogs out for a walk, as it may be a couple of days before the next opportunity.
Wind is starting to kick up and the temperature has begun it’s descent from 55 when I woke to 39 now on its way to 9 this evening.
Local Nashville news reporting that we will also be getting rolling blackouts as demand for power is beyond what TVA can handle. Hoping I will get to finish cooking sausage balls. Oven really heats up things in my condo and today that’s a good thing.
It poured rain here…and temps are supposed to drop to the low teens quickly. If it flash freezes, we will be able to ice skate in our driveway, but we won’t be able to drive up the hill that it is. It would be nice if the sun came out and dried all of this up!
Davenport isn’t nearly as cold as Minocqua (WI) – where I grew up – was.
Back in the 80s/90s the typical January high was like 7. So every winter we had a bunch of days below zero, some of which typically were in the -20s/30s. We would still come in out of the cold sweating from our tackle football exploits. lol. Today, that kind of weather and activity would be absolutely torturous.
But there was one day that is still vivid – senior year of high school, so I had a car at that point, my great-grandma’s 1981 Skylark.
I believe the low temp that day was like -48 or so, and the wind chill was around -70. It was the kind of cold that freezes wet hair and nostrils instantly. We had school, because the buses started. My car did not start, however, so I got the day off.
A neighbor called to alert me to rolling blackouts here outside of Knoxville.
I opened up the cabinet doors and am dripping in the back bathroom. It’s pretty warm in the great room so I don’t think I need to do that as long as the power is on.
We’ve had some of those, too. They really play havoc with H’s CPAP. At least we haven’t had sustained outages.
The temperature dropped to 2 early this morning. Since there are multiple cities with the same name, I double checked my phone’s weather settings to make sure it was on the right state. If we’re lucky, we should get to 13 by mid-afternoon. Typically, lows are in the mid-30s here in December.
I’m in MD - we had a ton of rain yesterday and temps actually increased in the evening, making it feel balmy outside when I let my dogs out last night. I went out this morning to run a few errands. It was drizzling and 45 degrees. When I got to the last place on my list 30 minutes later, the sun was out and I walked into the store (Barnes and Noble) with my sunglasses on. Walking to the register five minutes later and I glanced outside to see that it was pouring! Oh no, didn’t have a water resistant coat or hood, and my umbrella was in my car. I decided to browse longer, but it was still pouring 20-25 mins later so I just made a dash for it.
Driving home, the rain suddenly turned to snow. It snowed for an hour or so, but too warm to stick to roads, thankfully. The sun has now been out for a while but the wind is howling. Temp has dropped 20 degrees since I went out this morning. The power went out to my neighbors across the street and for several blocks north. Power company came out shortly thereafter, it came back on for them, but it just went out again! I can tell b/c my neighbor’s generator comes on automatically. My other neighbor is supposed to host his whole family for dinner tonight so he is really annoyed.
I’m trying to get as much cleaning and cooking done in case ours goes out at some point.
I’m in the western part of Virginia. Yesterday we had freezing rain and cold temps, slick roads. Last night it warmed up to almost 40. Went to the gym this morning, then into work for a few hours. What a change - it went from 38 degrees to 11. Wind is howling. No power issues yet, thankfully. D will drive in tomorrow.
we have -5 and -31 wind chill here. it is frigid and hurts to be outside.
i delivered cookie plates though yesterday and that was fun; lots of friends in their PJs!
i’ll read about the childrens blizzard. is that where they hung on to the ropes?
why are there rolling blackouts? and with electric, i assume?
I am sorry for all of those stuck in the storm and power outages!!! @creekland was S on 81? I hate that road on a normal day. I’m sure it was horrid yesterday. The trucks are just terrible on the hills - either going 80+ right on your bumper or 15 side by side in both lanes.
We thankfully all made it here!!! We did sit at the gate for 45 min which was a little grumbly, but all in all not awful. Older S and GF made it from Atlanta via Amsterdam a few hours ago.
Of course it seems that everyone around us is coughing or sneezing. I’m sure someone will come down with something, but at least we are together and I did pack half a pharmacy.
We’re on Lake Keowee, so not too far from the NC/GA/SC border and the mountains.
He was on I99 in PA mountains and I81 through the top part of VA before heading east on I66, then southeast on 17.
I agree with you about I81, but I still prefer that route when we head south to FL over I95. We have to take I95 if we want to stop at FILs or go to Wilson, NC, for H’s favorite BBQ. He grew up in Wilson. We get to stop by VT (Alma mater) if we take I81. When we went north to my mom’s it was all I81 turning off just before the bridge to Canada.
ps Glad you all made it!
TVA needs to lighten their load by 5 or 10% so rolling blackouts not to overwhelm the power grid.
I’m surprised but TVA is the government not private so they have different rules than public utilities.
So far the power has stayed on here.
My husband worked his entire career in power generation, he was very surprised also.
Well…we don’t have snow, and right now it isn’t windy or raining. We have been having little brown outs all day long. Have no idea why.
Sheets of ice are slowly growing around everything outside… lots of accidents everywhere. Mr. B was thankful that I dragged him out to go food shopping last night. Our hill is solid ice today.
Son advised they closed the road to Upper Queen Anne.
After announcing rolling blackouts, around noon the new announcement was that TVA was suspending blackouts, but asking people to conserve power. Not much of a contribution, but I have refrained from turning on Christmas tree lights so far today.
Smart move. I read that some pedestrians got injured downtown today. The QA hill is notoriously bad. Not the steepest street in Seattle apparently but the longest steep street.
