Christmas Week Storm/Deep Freeze

And here…we just had snow flurries in the last hour🙄

The Seattle area is a mess. Ice everywhere. SeaTac was completely closed this morning; now, only one of three runways is open. All bus service is suspended. Lots of roads are closed. I couldn’t even walk on our street to feed the neighbors’ cats; I had to bushwhack through our backyards. I just watched a neighbor kid sled down the street. He slid right under the parked pickup at the end. I don’t think he was hurt. I wanted to yell at him to at least put on a bike helmet, but apparently the trip was scary enough that he didn’t repeat it.

I35 from Ames (Iowa State) north to Minnesota was closed about an hour ago.

I did go into work today, as soon as I got there at 8 am there was an email saying to go home at 2 pm. So, I did. It took me twice as long to get home because people were being stupid and changing lanes. And, I took the long way to avoid I80 off/on ramps.

And now in CT…very very gusty winds and the temps have dropped into the 20’s and going down. I guess I shouldn’t hang my wreath back up…yet.

The high tomorrow is 14. But sunny…guess we have to celebrate something. And our local ski area will be able to make snow!

Two died in a 50 car pile up on the Ohio Turnpike today.

Oh no.

My power has been stable for over 24 hours, but D texted an hour ago to say they have had 3 blackouts so far. TVA had requested 10% reduction earlier this morning, but is now down to asking for 5%, so maybe they won’t get any additional blackouts. Nashville mayor asked Titans to postpone this afternoon’s game earlier as 90,000 Nashville households are without power, but can’t find any reaction, so I guess that’s a no from the team.

We’re surviving in GA! hahaha

We did have a minor issue in our household due to the 10+ mini power outages yesterday… the blower on our downstairs heating unit stopped blowing and I walked downstairs to 52 degrees. After a bit of panic, lighting a fire, setting up a space heater and preparing to pay who knows what for an emergency holiday repair before we leave town, I noticed a post on our neighborhood FB page from a neighbor who had the same issue and fixed it by “resetting” the unit… turn off unit, flip the breaker off for 30 seconds then back on, turn on unit… and it worked! Hopefully crisis averted with a Christmas miracle!

We are at a WHOLE whopping 7 degrees right now which is about 12 degrees warmer than yesterday. Still a very windy day but gusts are fewer and farther between. Imagine the electric/gas bill is going to be :open_mouth: this month but what can you do.

Have family traveling on the Pennsylvania and Ohio turnpike today - I’m super anxious but 4 hours or so into their ride and they are doing ok and report decent travel. After reading about that Ohio Turnpike 50 car/4 deaths pile up yesterday I did NOT sleep good last night. :frowning:

Denver has resurfaced. It’s now 36 degrees at 10 am, and headed up. Tomorrow should be 50 so perfect dog walking weather. And somehow our heat is at 66 (was stuck at 57, and my BIL said it was a ‘circulating pump’ that needed to be replaced). A Christmas miracle, I think.

Another miracle will be how I pay the electric bill after using space heaters non-stop for 3 days.

I don’t want to jinx it but we made it through yesterday and overnight with just a few quick blinks. Our neighbors’ across the street lost power twice, but both times it was rather short lived (couple of hours the first time and maybe an hour the second time).

However last night around 8 pm, someone who lives a few blocks north of is reported her power was out. We live at the bottom of a 2 mile long peninsula. From the top of the peninsula all the way to the entrance to my neighborhood (my neighborhood is the last 1/2 mile), everyone had lost power. It didn’t come back on for them until around 3am.

Winds are not as strong but still windy, it’s sunny and 16 degrees with wind chill of 5 degrees. Thankfully, shopping is done and we are staying home all day so don’t have to be outside.

I feel for all those working outside for the power companies in these conditions, esp during the holidays.

We are at positive 6 degrees, the first time over 0 in 3ish days. It is still windy and travel not advised across most of the northern half of the state.

One of my blind residents listens to his TV most of the day. He told me yesterday that we are to have temps in the 50’s and thunderstorms next Friday.

There are two books with the same title. One is non-fiction and the other is fiction. I was sucked into both of them. In one of them, they mentioned tying the girls aprons together to act as a rope. It was impossible to see and easy to be blown off course (if you even knew the course). Pioneer life was extremely hard!

Son’s house in OH lost power sometime overnight, but it was restored by early afternoon and there were no problems (he had a friend go inside to check).

Son in Rochester, NY, said they didn’t get much snow and had no problems.

No power outage where we are in VA. I’m not sure about our place back home, but don’t think we lost power there either or our farm sitter most likely would have texted me.

My other son/DIL are in CA with DIL’s parents and not having any problems. It was cold, but not like the rest of us.

I hope all is well with everyone. I see some awful headlines coupled with pretty (if you’re not out in it) pictures.

Be wary of pipes freezing. Yesterday one of our toilets wouldn’t fill with water. We had to access a nearby crawlspace and us a fan to circulate warmer air around the pipes. We also started a slow drip from the sink faucet in that room. D got notice that pipes were freezing and bursting in her Columbus apartment complex. My sister’s friend in MD also reported a frozen pipe.

Today (xmas) is my DH’s 65th birthday. We were supposed to be on a plane to see the kids/grandkids this afternoon and they had some surprises for him, but alas, when we went to check in, the flight had been cancelled. Website was wonky and wouldn’t let us rebook online. Waited on hold for a half hour (doesn’t sound too bad but we are platinum medallion fliers and this was supposed to be the priority line). No flights available today or tomorrow. Will fly out Tues morning (crummy seats, but we have seats) and back home on Friday. Well, better than not seeing them, but bummer… So we went to see the Whitney Houston movie today. Was long but enjoyable. But would rather have been on the plane to see the family. Oh well. Hoping we have a smooth flight Tues.

editing to add-- I have 2 packages (40 total) of chocolate Santas I was going to hand out to the airport and airline crew today. Will bring one pack to the friends that invited us over. Will keep the second for our travels Tues.

We came back from the Caribbean’s yesterday. Our flight came from Burbank to JFK and JFK to where we were. We were on time to come back, except when we landed the temperature was in the teens. I was not dressed for that.

We spent the 23rd hoping for my D’s boyfriend’s flight to escape Chicago (she had more time off work and had come a few days prior). Finally boarded and then said departed but didn’t depart for another hour or more, after they unfroze the jetbridge from the plane and de-iced. We celebrated when it was finally en route—one of very few flights from Chicago that made it here on Friday.

No problems landing here (AZ) and he got to try wakeboarding on Christmas Eve.
