Cincinnati DAAP for Fine Arts in painting- anyone have any experience with the program?

My daughter wants to major in Fine Arts with a focus on painting. She’s very talented both artistically and academically. So far she has applied and got accepted to VCU Arts, University of Michigan STAMPS School of Art, University of Cincinnati DAAP and Kent State. I know DAAP is very well known for the Industrial Design and Architecture program but you don’t hear much about Fine Arts and they don’t offer a whole lot of info about the paining/drawing program online either. Kent State and Cinci will be the most affordable schools for us but I am not sure what to steer towards. I’d like to know if anyone has experience at DAAP for Fine Arts. Thanks

Hi! I also applied to University of Michigan STAMPS School of Art and Design as early action but I’m not sure if I have not received my result yet or I’m viewing the wrong page. I went on the wolverine access website and then clicked new & prospective student business and then signed in. I was told to go to application status but nothing shows up except for my application number, academic career, application term, etc. I’m not sure if I should email them or just wait for few more days. What did your daughter do to check her result? Thank you! I’m sorry I can’t answer your question

My daughter got an email last week saying she was accepted and we got her packet in the mail from UM yesterday. I’m sorry you didn’t hear anything.

Well, the fact no one has replied and all I read on here about DAAP is concerning the Industrial Design program kind of confirms my concerns. I think they will be on the bottom of the list.

@DBY2017 wish I had some information for you. What is your daughters first choice?

University of Michigan STAMPS would be her first choice, but it’s the most expensive because we are out of state. U of Michigan and VCU Arts would be the top schools for her. Both of them required a portfolio as part of the admission and I think the quality of the students and program reputation will be better than both DAAP and Kent. However DAAP and Kent will be the cheapest for us. I called Cinci and they couldn’t even give me concrete information about he new Co-op program for Fine Arts at DAAP (which could be a selling point over the other schools). If you look on their website they have like 2 paragraphs dedicated to the the Fine Arts program and Painting/Drawing.

Such a tough decision. My daughter was just accepted to DAAP ID today. It’s been her first choice but we are definitely going to visit before making our final decision.

The Co-op program is a huge draw for my daughter to UC. In fact, I was discussing art schools yesterday with a designer at work yesterday. He does consulting for us and I wanted to get his take on art school. His take was that it’s super important to get some real world experience. That was the best thing for him and he didn’t get that until he graduated.

Does your daughter have any idea on what her preferred career path would be?

I love the idea of the co-op program for Fine Arts majors. Perhaps you should schedule a visit to DAAP and meet some students, see what kind of work they’re doing, and what kind of co-ops they have.

We have been to DAAP a few times. The co-op is brand new for Fine Arts and students are doing it for the first time this year I believe. As of now, it is basically the student finding places or doing an unpaid co-op with an artist. They did not have a list for me or anything established. The follow up from DAAP has been very poor.

DAAP is primarily a design school. Thus, if you want interior design, industrial design, transportation design, architecture or communication design, they are very good. This is particularly true because of the internships that they offer. HOWEVER, their fine art division is a bit lackluster.

Thanks. That is what I thought because there is so little info about their Fine Arts program. It’s looking like University of Michigan is where we are leaning towards. My daughter got enough aid and scholarships from UM to make it slightly cheaper than UC. Hard to believe. UC doesn’t give out much merit aid at all.
