UC DAAP or Denison?

Hey everyone,

So I'm a senior in high school, and I found out a few months ago that I was accepted to a number of schools (Pratt, Denison, University of Cincinnati DAAP, and Loyola University of Chicago) I'm still waiting to hear back from Lawrence, Carleton, and Ringling. At the moment, my top two are UC DAAP and Denison, but I have no idea what direction I want to lean towards :(

I applied to art schools, but scratched them because I want to study other subjects (like Classics). I know that UC isn't necessarily as "highly ranked" as Denison, and Dension has smaller classes and more personal attention, but I also like the urban setting and larger school size of UC...

So, is there anyone at Denison currently that can speak about their studio art program? Or is someone a fine arts major at DAAP? Do you like it? I know that the architecture and industrial design departments are highly rated there, but I haven't heard as much about their fine arts department.

I would appreciate ANYTHING you have to offer. :)

My DD1 was a Studio Arts minor at Denison (with an English major). She enjoyed it very much. Of all her classes oil painting was the only one she didn’t care for and that was with a new instructor who, in her opinion, didn’t give enough time to allow projects to dry before starting another one. Do you have specific info you are looking for?

I know a few fine arts students at DAAP, and they like it. UC’s Classics dept is one of the best in the country. One thing, I’ve toured the DAAP building and it seems like many of the fine arts studios are windowless, which I wouldn’t like–the design studios get the windows, the FA is buried in the lower parts of the building.

DAAP has a great international reputation, I think the Fine Arts school kind of rides on the coat tails of the Design programs. The student work I’ve seen from Fine Arts looks great, though, and there are some good opportunities/cultural things in Cincinnati that might be lacking at Denison–depends on what atmosphere you like best.

I cannot really speak to the quality of the Fine Arts program but am curious to know–you might consider reposting your DAAP question on the Visual Arts forum on this site. There are people there who know more.

Erin’s Dad:
I’m glad to hear your DD1 enjoyed Denison. I know that they recently just renovated their facilities, and they are pretty top notch. I guess my questions about Denison are different than those about UC, since UC’s deal with the quality of the fine arts program. Why did your DD1 choose to go to Denison? Did she find the student body to be too small and Granville too remote of a town?

IUmom7,
Thank you for the info about their classics dept, I didn’t know it was so highly recognized! I think the fact that it “rides on the coat tails of the Design programs” is what worries me most, since I’m not sure if that means that UC puts a ton of focus on Design and then has a not so great fine arts program…

DD1 chose Denison because of a merit scholarship. She didn’t find the student body to be too small but at times had difficulty getting the classes she wanted. I’m not sure that would be different at any school. She loved Granville. She would walk down the hill to the farmers market every Saturday to look around and bring back a little goodie.
