Cincinnatus Scholarship

We just got a letter from UC advising us that our daughter has received a Cincinnatus Scholarship. She has been invited to come to the college on February 7th for the final adjudications to see if she will receive anywhere from $2000 to $20,000 renewable. If she cannot come, she just needs to fill out paperwork and she will receive $2000 renewable.

First off, my D has yet to audition, and that is the reason she cannot come on February 7th. Her audition for CCM is at the unifieds in LA that weekend. (She actually is auditioning for Juiliard on the 7th in S.F.)

Second, she obviously has not been accepted to CCM yet. She hasn’t even auditioned yet.

Will the fact that she is being given this scholarship by UC have any impact on CCM in its consideration of her? Will CCM know that she has been given this scholarship by UC when it auditions her? Should my D bring it up at her audition? Or should she just assume CCM and UC will communicate since you have to be admitted to UC and CCM, theoretically?

chrissyblu - congratulations on your D's accomplishment! A friend of ours received a similar letter last year, and, from what I understood, the invitation is predominantly based on significant academic achievement, may be with some consideration for extra curricular (i.e. community service) involvement. However, it does not seem to have any bearing on subsequent acceptance to CCM. Your D could perhaps bring it up during the brief Q & A during her audition, and for example let them know how excited she is to have been awarded such and such scholarship; I don't really get the impression that that UC effectively communicates this to the CCM faculty.

I got the letter too. Congrats to you! I have to choose between going to Millikin that weekend for their Presidential scholarship interview and Cincinnati for the Cincinnatus. Luckily, I will have already auditioned for Millikin by the date, so if I don't make it there I won't have to go. A general question: Do you think I should RSVP "attending" for both and then cancel one of them later depending on my acceptance to their MT programs? My CCM audition isn't until Feb. 4 (in Chicago) so I won't know either way from them by the time the date rolls around, but doesn't Millikin tell you the day of your audition?

The Cincinnatus award is a university based award and is communicated to the specific colleges that a student applied to however, I do not know how far down the list - college to department to program - this information goes. I do not work in CCM but in the college I do work in, we get a listing of students who are attending the scholarship competition beacuse the college has a reception for them in the afternoon, where we once again try to woe the students to choose UC.

There are alternate days for the scholarship competition besides the Feb. 7 (but I think they all in Feb. also.) and she still may not know if she is accepted to UC. there was a MT student a couple of years ago who was accepted into MT and received a full Cincinnatus scholarship, but they are unrelated events.

Knarfydna - I have worked at several of the Cincinnatus days and there are always a number of students who do not attend after they have RSVPed. There is a group activity that they try and keep the numbers roughly between 10-12 for, and if you are not there your group will be closer to the 10 but it is unlikely to change anything. Depending on weathre all over the country there are always students who can not make it.

My daughter also received this scholarship prior to her audition, and we were unsure of whether to bring it up at her audition. She took in a copy of the invitation with her headshot, and it didn't hurt. They strongly encouraged her to attend one of the competition dates, and we only had one date left that we could attend, and that was the weekend after Unifieds in NY. It was a good trip, although she didn't end up getting more scholarship, but it seemed to be well recieved by the staff at CCM that we came.

Thanks for the advice. Problem is the week after she does have the "other" UC (we are Californians... forgive us...), so that may limit her ability to travel to Ohio. I heard that sometimes a letter may be sufficient to get the "out of state" award, so I will give a call to the university and see if maybe we can try that option. Its such a drag that it is the weekend of unifieds because it would have been a great opportunity for her to go to the campus. Her principal and a friend of mine all went to CCM and she met one of the actresses in the tour of Spring Awakening who convinced her to apply.... I would have liked her to visit the campus.

I encourage you to let her visit later if she gets in. The facilities are lovely. Good luck! ;')

My D received a Cinncinatus invitation as well. Her audition date is Jan 24th. We're wondering if she will have received an acceptance or rejection before Feb 7th because of the expense involved for us to travel to Ohio twice. I know that if one is accepted, he or she hears of the news quite quickly. But rejections? are they sent out as quickly?

TX:
You remember me from Point Park and CMU Auditions! I auditioned on December 6th, and I have yet to hear from Cincinnati :(

During my D's cycle 2 years ago the kids that were deferred/waitlisted until the end of auditions received no communication while those accepted or rejected did. She knew of a half or dozen, incuding herself, who had no communication until late March or early April, at which point rejection or waitlist letters came. If you are not hearing anything that is good in that it means you are probably still in the consideration pile. Hope this helps.

My son got an invitation for Cincinnatus too, but we'll also be in LA at the Unifieds that weekend. He went online to RSVP and selected another date, Feb. 13. That's going to be a busy couple of weeks for us!

We will be in LA for UCLA auditions that weekend... Feb 13th....

ttmom:
that def helps! Thanks! They said to call tomorrow if we havent heard anything from them yet, so I am going to and see what the deal is! I'll post the info on my "Just got back from CCM audition" thread for anyone whos interested :)

Hi! I got my cinncinatus letter also, but like a few of you I am also going to be at the LA Unifieds auditioning on the 7th so I don't know what I'm going to do, plus I don't think we have the money to fly to Ohio at the moment... Does the CCM program give a lot of scholarship?

Just a short note to tell anyone who has been invited to the Cincinnatus competition to try as much as they can to go. My student is the one "keepingcalm" mentioned who is a MT major and was awarded a "full award" . I do know that it was an exciting and fun weekend for him and with the economy of today and financial aide hard to come by it can mean a great difference in the amount you are awarded. Good Luck to everyone who tries out!

mtboymom...was your son already accepted to CCM by the time the competition was held?

Yes, he auditioned on Dec. 6th? I believe and found out 3 days later by email that he had been accepted. Good Luck to all!

Mtboymom:
I remember you and your son and I hope this finds you both well and happy :-)

Michele

Received notification from Cincinnatus competition today. Increased the $, but still not heard from the MT Dept! So hoping the waiting list is now really small and some of the accepted decide to go elsewhere to open up a couple of spots! Anyone else still not heard either way?

We're hoping for good new too, but we're still waiting. My daughter got the $2K letter as well, went to the competition last month (I think - it's all starting to blur lol). She has an accept from the CCM, but no word on any bump in the Cincinnatus yet.
