Cincinnatus scholarship competition

My D was invited to go to Cincinnati to compete for this award on 2/11/05. Has anyone here ever done this, or does anyone know more about it? The potential awards are great, but we won't even know if she was admitted to CCM by then, and, of course, it's a long shot that she might be.
The down side is the expense of travel, and the fact that she has an audition scheduled elsewhere that weekend.
We're wondering what the competition is, and what the kids actually do there? I'll call the school, but sometimes it helps to have an applicants perspective too.

My D was invited to compete for the Cincinnatus scholarship and I am also a UC alumni. This is the most prestigious scholarship on campus and the 10 full rides that are awarded are open for all incoming freshman not just MT majors and the competition is very tough. As I understand it, there are also several levels of smaller awards.

I found the following discription on the UC Alumni donor website:

"Students visit UC for a one-day competition, in which they are assessed on the basis of academic abilities, creative skills, and leadership potential. Aptitude for community service is an important criterion. Every student who participates in the Cincinnatus Scholarship Program will be awarded at least $2,000 in University of Cincinnati scholarship funds."

My understanding is that leadership and community service play a big part, so it is more than just grades and academic ability.

We are in the same boat, at the time of the competion, my D most likely will not have heard from CCM if she is accepted. Here is how we are approaching it: IT CAN'T HURT. Although the odds are slim that my D will receive the full ride, any additional $$ help and we hope by making the effort she will receive more than the $5000 offered. (I am doing this by memory, but I believe all out-of-state students who are invited to compete automatically qualify for atleast $5000.)

I work at UC and frequently serve as an assessor for the Cincinnatus scholarhsip competition. I can prvide you with some general information about what happens on the day it you would like, please sned me an PM or email.

I would like to go, but I have a show that weekend, and since I live in California, it'll cost me $1000 already to go. Its a big investment for a scholarship to a school I dont even know if I'm going to (I'll know I think by the time the event takes place).

Does the fact that we got this mean we got in academically?

drum 87-
since I am not in admissions, I of course can't confirm anything, but from what I know about the scholarhsip competition it would mean you are in academically.
I can see how for you this is a tough decision about whether to come to or not, its much more difficult for MT and CCM students in general who have that audition to deal with not just an academic acceptance as most programs do.

CollegeMom: Can this section be moved to the Cincinnati-CCM thread?

ThespianDad: I talked to someone in Admissions, and was told that this is the first year that a student can receive an award without attending the competition. A person who is invited to the competition (based on class rank or SAT/ACT scores) who doesn't attend the competition, will get $2,000 per year for OH residents, and $5,000 per year for out of state students.

I believe it is mandatory that you confirm to them (Admissions) whether you will, or will not, be at one of the competitions. They have a primary date, and then two (maybe three?) make-up days.

I know that two of the qualifiers for being invited to the competition were being in the top 10% of your class OR having an SAT score of 1170 (Critical Reading & Math combined). I don't recall what she said about the total score necessary for the ACT test.

The lady that I spoke to was very nice and informative, and said how excited they were that all qualifying students would be able to receive the minimum scholarship (even without attending).

Hope this helps!

I decided to opt out of going to Cincinnati to compete.

Still, its a very nice christmas present to recieve a $5000 academic scholarship to your top school!

Me too, Drum87. I deicided its not worth the cost of a flight to apply for a scholarship that I have little chance in getting, expecially when I don't know if I'll be attending CCM.

It's kind of like a game of Who Want's To Be A Millionare- risking it and going on for more questions and money, or just taking the money. Im taking the money, and if I end up at CCM, I'll be $20,000 bucks the richer afterwords. It's not a bad deal.

For the record, my girlfriend won a full ride two years ago though cincinnatus. My guess is that it was mainly on leadership becasue she was only top 12% in hs and had a 1250 sat. But, even with the full ride, she transfered out of the university becasue she didnt like it.
By the way, she didnt make MT but she made vocal performance.

Cincinnatus Scholarship competition awards have been sent out... s got his last Sat. glta

I got teh award this year. I couldnt go to the event, so I opted to select the $5000 a year scholarship for out of state students.

I didnt get accepted to the MT program however...but it IS an option if I want to go to another school....

ALl i had to do to recieve the award was fill out a questionairre online! It was easy! Good luck!
