Cinema Studies (and general College of Arts, Media, + Design)

So today I learned I would be eligible for a full tuition scholarship at NEU, hinging on me becoming a National Merit Finalist (which is likely). Considering the co-ops, Boston, etc. - it's almost too good to be true. I knew of NEU and was considering applying, but it wasn't until today that it was added to my official list.

Thing is, I'd like to major in something related to film or television, and while NEU's multiple Cinema Studies-related dual degrees seems to offer a unique chance to specialize, I'm wondering just how strong these programs are. Does anyone have any information on them, whether through direct experience or from friends? Are there co-ops available like helping on a production's set, or something similar? I'm also interested in theater, so if you have any experience there, I'd appreciate that as well.

If it helps, I'm also considering BU's Film and Television program, as well as Emerson College for something similar.

Anything is welcome - thank you in advance! =)

Emerson is much stronger, although I’m not sure about BU (but I’d suspect it is stronger too). Can’t say if Northeastern is strong or not though, just that Emerson is specifically known for programs like that. I know a friend who got an unpaid half-time (20 hours) co-op helping with the news at Fox, but the co-ops are pretty rare. You can call the advisors and ask what sort of co-ops their recent students have had, and how often they’re paid (which can be rare for things like film or journalism).

Try to keep in mind that even from the best programs with the best internships and gigs, Boston is littered with recent graduates who hoped to work on sets, would settle for helping their friend film a class project, and actually work at as a waiter full-time. Not that you should give it up or anything, but I’d be very nervous about taking on a lot of debt for career prospects like film and theater.

Northeastern has a strong Music Industry program that could be combined with Entrepreneurship from the Business School, if that is your thing. You may not equate music with film and TV, but I suspect there is a lot of overlap in the kinds of education and skills needed. Otherwise, I would agree with neuchimie.

Of course, financial aid should be a big part of your decision, unless you are independently wealthy.
