D's best friend very down about receiving a deferral to Emerson's film program - her dream school. She is a good but not outstanding student with OK, not outstanding SATs, and strong ECs.

Looking for other alternatives for a film program (most interested in production) in the Northeast - probably would not make it into NYU. Does anyone have other suggestions?

momof, unfortunately there aren't a lot of options. NYU, Emerson, Columbia are all usually on the lists of kids who want to study film in the NE. If she didn't get into Emerson, though, her chances at NYU or Columbia are probably not good. Many other popular schools for film are on the west coast, USC, and Chapman come to mind. There's also Florida State, and maybe North Carolina School of the Arts is worth a look.

Columbia is a graduate program. Others to consider in the east based on what I think are the academic qualifications of the student follow. I've included a few in the upper south.

Ithaca (as good as Emerson)

Temple

Virginia Commonwealth University

North Carolina School for the Arts (outstanding but basically an art school.)

Towson State

FSU is one of the hardest film schools in the country to get into because of its small size.

For a less selective school, take a look at Hofstra. In the communications dept they have an audio/video/film major as well as a film studies/production major. Lots of video/tv stuff.

Ithaca College is a sleeper...excellent program with lots of outside funding, and opportunities.Good internship/job connections.
Make sure your kid is okay with being in that area though.

We have a friend, an accomplished videographer, who spent one year at Hofstra film and was bored silly. He is now completing a one year program at the New York Film something or another, and finds it much more challenging. He hopes to transfer to NYU Film.

New York Film Academy would be a very different experience from Hofstra. It may help him develop a portfolio for potential transfer to NYU but it's not an accredited college (unless something has changed very recently) so credits would not transfer. He probably would have been better off just applying to transfer directly from Hofstra if he's an accomplished videographer.
