Hi CC!
I am applying for the City of Hope summer intern program (for the second time, last year I was a sophomore, applied but didnt even make it to the second round ><). I just really want to know what do they really look for in the application, is the short answer the most important part?

I am really interested in this one professor's research project on mRNAs genetic processing etc. so I kept on mentioning it throughout the short answers, would that look annoying to the admission officers?

I have also heard that they usually only take people who have already had actual lab experience from other programs, is that true?

I’m applying as well. Didn’t mention any specific researchers I’m interested in, just the labs (Stem Cell and Leukemia, Virology, Immunology).

I have some minimal lab experience (ie did a lab techniques course and was an intern in a biological lab), but I don’t know how far that’ll carry me.

Do you know when City of Hope notifies applicants whether/not they make it to the second stage?

I’m a HS senior, I have minimal previous lab experience, I do have a previous research internship doing computer simulations, which I assume is mostly relevant for computer-based research at City of Hope.

@souseis Is this a college or HS sophomore

What I’m guessing they look for: experience, both with coursework and lab work/previous research. Grades/test scores. Outstanding accomplishments (ISEF and so forth). Demonstrated interest in doing independent research. The short answers are really to get a feel of why you want to do research, presumably what you talk about here and on your resume/supplemental materials (previous research experience, accomplishments, etc.) is more important than exactly how you answer the SA questions… they’re looking for researchers, not creative writers. City of Hope is competitive enough that I’m guessing most accepted interns do have lab experience, but of course I don’t know for sure.

Does anyone know what they mean in the application when they say “If possible, list 2 or 3 laboratories you would like to work in.” Where can we find - somewhere online possibly - which laboratories we can choose from?

I’m with you, Bioboy. I first read it as “300 words” and typed my heart away, then was forced to cut down to 300 characters. But the small word limit really prevents you from rambling, though, and helps cut out the superfluous parts of your responses.

I just submitted mine, and got 6 identical confirmation emails, all identically time-stamped…

I also got 6 confirmation emails! So weird. I thought I did something wrong at first.

I liked the 300 characters thing. So much easier than the other summer program apps I did.

I uploaded a resume and a transcript. I also had my research mentor from last summer and AP Bio teacher send letters, and had my school mail an official transcript.

Last year (as HS Sophmore), I made the first cut Hopefully I make it again this year. I really want to get into COH because has a generous stipend and its close to where I live. Yes. They mean 300 Characters, not words. With 1000+ applicants, they don’t have enough time to read 300 words. Last year, my supplementals were my transcript and a letter of recc from a bio honors teacher (both mailed in with pre-stamped, pre-addressed envelope to keep integrity of documents). I thought my responses last year were very convoluted and didn’t directly answer the question I was surprised I got to the Second Round. This year, I took the initiative to volunteer there every week. Hopefully stuff works out best of luck to you all!

If I get past the first round, I will be emailing my heart out. Also I’m gonna need someone to rent an apartment with if the time comes soo all accepted people should stay active on this thread so we can work that out if needed.
