15 minutes before my interview, the PI sent me an email that said she already found someone. And we confirmed the interview this morning. Well, I guess I’m taking SAT lessons this summer.

…What the hell? That’s messed up and uncalled for. There’s still time if you want to keep trying :/

If anyone has interviewed so far, do you mind listing the kinds of things they ask you? I’ve only received one offer, so I don’t want to walk into the interview clueless.

@harryloo: I know how you feel. Same with my PI… but there are still summer programs out there, please keep trying and I know you will get them!!! Best of luck on your SAT!!

@ National: I thought the interview was by phone. At least this was the case with my PI… was.

Anyone know how many spots left? How many high schoolers have been accepted on this thread? I heard 75% of the 180 applicants are undergrads, but I don’t know if this is true.

darn cut-throat summer programs

It is by phone. Just using a figure of speech :)

In addition to the kinds of things that they ask, do you know about how long each interview is?

@crazyboutbio I am a high schooler and I am accepted, but I unfortunately still have to figure out housing.

Does an interview follow once you have made a mutual agreement to do research with a mentor? And for those of you who are losing faith, keep your head up! I got a surprise email from a PI who wasn’t even on the list yesterday. Apparently a PI who I had emailed and was already full up in his laboratory forwarded my application to someone else in his department. Truly humbling and well you never know what can happen!

FYI there is now a facebook group for City of Hope. https://www.facebook.com/groups/cityofhope2013/ Let me know if anyone has problems trying to ask for permission to get in.

no permission to view group ):

Sorry changed it!

did anyone get accepted to the CIRM program?

Awesome job brainyhack!!! Thanks a lot for giving us all hope :)

how did you find out you were accepted to the cirm program?

people who are accepted: how long did it take for your acceptance and the time you e-mailed the professor?

anyone know how many spots left? should i keep e-mailing professors?

thanks! and congrats!!! :)

(btw what’s the cirm program?)

I haven’t received a formal acceptance into the Academy from the committee yet. It took me five days after sending out my cover letters before I was contacted by a PI. For anyone who was accepted already, does an invitation from the PI guarantee admission into the program? What can I expect to happen following my decision to accept their invitation and how long after did it take for you to receive your formal acceptance notice? What does it say? And who sends it out?

ummm i have not gotten accepted but mrs. sleeth’s e-mail said official acceptance letters from the program would come at the end of april if you were invited by the pi. best of luck!

Question: I made a mutual agreement with a mentor last week. Should I be getting my formal letter tomorrow then?

I can’t believe I made it past the second round and that I’m really going to be doing research with a hospital I can only dream of working for someday!!!
Every year since highschool I’ve filled out the application and once I get to the halfway point I decide not to submit it. Years later, as an undergrad in a little known community college I finally muster up the courage to get past my nervous anxiety and click submit. I took a gamble and it was worth every bit of it. Sometimes good things happen to good people and you don’t need to be perfect. Sometimes we all win a little.

Internships applied to:
UCI CHEM SURF (Rejected)
UH Cancer Center (Rejected)
City of Hope (Accepted)

I ALSO JUST GOT ACCEPTED TO UCLA muthaf*^%$ers!

Life Lesson #1: Things don’t always happen when you want them to.
Life Lesson #2: It’s never too late to believe in your dreams and make them happen!!!

Are allowed to enter our contests into Siemens or Intel?

I know people have entered their projects, but you should probably get your mentor and PI’s permission first (you’re going to need their support for your applications, anyway). Might be worth checking with Dr. Sleeth too.
