@Persondontexist - when I got the second round confirmation email yesterday, I shot off around 6-7 cover letters to the researchers I’d already been looking at and got two positive responses. Two denials today, so I’m waiting on another couple before finalizing my decision.

@Shadowyams - I need three more posts before I can pm you, so hopefully I can talk with you soon. No, I wasn’t a student in 2012 - I applied and was rejected last year haha.

Hey guys I emailed 6-7 of the professors, and I got 3 replies saying that they already picked their candidates. Do you guys think it’s too late? Pretty nervous/sad lol. Thanks.

Congrats everyone who got in!

And no, it’s definitely not too late. Keep chuggin’ away and emailing different professors. As for me, I just finalized my agreement with my mentor this afternoon. Really excited for this guys! :)

@harryloo keep trying but hurry! I received a phone call today, and I sent in my email this morning!

alright thanks guys. It seems like everyone is full already!! yikes! Anybody have any advice? Nobody since my 3 rejections have responded to me? I wonder if that means they already have someone lol.

@harryloo, I’d suggest continuing to contact mentors, and maybe outside of the list, too - I know someone who got a mentor who wasn’t on the list at all. Follow up on your letters within a reasonable amount of time (if they haven’t replied for a day when you’d expect them to check an email, then I’d send them a follow up email and ask if they even have any open spaces yet.) Good luck! Hope to see you this summer!

Alright thank you so much for the advice! I doubt I’ll be acepted at this point, but I won’t give up just yet! thanks so much and it would be a true dream come true to meet you this summer!

Yes, this is my second year. I don’t know of anyone who entered into Siemens, Intel STS, or ISEF, but most of my friends there were college students or graduating seniors.

The first day is for orientation, meeting with your mentor, and other various stuff. I believe the lab safety training session was that day as well, but my memory’s a little foggy right now. After that, you spend essentially all of your time working in the lab, though your lab group might arrange for training and safety sessions (e.g. how to use the camera on the microscope, etc.). There’s a mandatory seminar once a week by a scientist from City of Hope or elsewhere and a presentation from one of the summer students as well. If you’re a CIRM student, there are additional activities and seminars that you have to participate in (the same might apply for the CURE programme, but I’m not sure). Your lab group will probably also have weekly meetings or have a journal club that you’ll be expected to attend. The poster session’s near the end of the 10 weeks (depending on your start date), and preparing for that, designing your poster, and what not, will take a while.

You’ll be busy; trust me.

@Harryloo GOOD LUCK!

@Shadowyams - Do you know how many returning students are planning on going this summer? Also, just curious, besides the initial lab safety training, how did you meet the rest of the kids in the program?

Does anyone know how many spots are left? :0

I’m kind of freaking out.

Hey guys, I got offered an interview next Tuesday…which seems really, really far away. it seems like spots are filling up really fast, and i think by tuesday all the spots will be filled. What do you guys think? Does anyone know if each researcher is guaranteed a certain number of students, or is it first come first serve on their side too? Thanks guys and good luck to all.

@harryloo
I think spots are first come first serve in general (unfortunately)
But I’m not too sure what you can do now…Hopefully no one else is getting any spots. Anyway, Tuesday isn’t that far! (As I doubt anyone will be interviewing over the weekend or anything).

Good luck!! Let us know if you get a spot!

@Fundamentals
Thanks for the info! Hopefully, the wont be like…sorry we’re out of spots during the phone call lol. I’ll let you know if I do get a spot and I hope to meet all of u soon!

What does it mean if I got a response that says I am looking at your CV to see if you are a good fit for my lab. I haven’t heard a response since and it’s been 12 hours. Should I follow up?

Man, I got that too. CV is curiculum vitae, and its basically all the courses and degrees we have. Unfortunately, I don’t even have a high school diploma (yet)…

Have you followed up yet? At 2:00 today I will be. Its been 24 hours since and I am well aware of how fast these positions are dwindling. I just assumed that the researcher meant resume by CV. I did send an attachment of my research resume with my email. Did you?

No i didnt send anything, she just said she will take a look. I think there should be positions open for a little bit longer since i have an interview on tues… but i cant be sure

@harryloo: when did you e-mail the PI who is interviewing you?

@ brainyhack: I sent my resume.

Did anyone receive replies after e-mailing people on Friday night or Saturday? How many spots do you think are left? If we haven’t got an acceptance by now, does that mean all the spots are gone?

Thanks!

I emailed the PI on thursday. Spots should not be gone…or the PI is trolling me…
