City of Rochester

Do students ever go into downtown Rochester? Is it something they do once in a while, or do they go a lot on the weekends or something?

I know there are some other schools in the area...Does Rochester have some "collegey" parts with young students, etc?

I'm just trying to get a feel for what the actual downtown city is like! Thanks

The Eastman School of Music, which is a school of the UR, is located downtown. There are 800 students who live and go to school there. There are shuttles that run back and forth between the two campuses. All of the concerts at Eastman are either free or low cost to UR students. There are several restaurants near Eastman frequented by students. There are also a fair number of clubs that allow students ages 18-21 entrance. (If you are over 21, you get a wristband to allow you to buy alcohol.) The area right around Eastman is OK. The main business area is kind of deserted after 5:00.
There really isn't a student area of town, but there are some nicer places where students can and do hang out.

My son was an Eastman student from 02-06. When he first got there, he didn't like Rochester at all, but he said that the city grew on him over time. He would not mind going back there to live if an opportunity presented itself.

yeah park ave has nice shops and restaurants and the clubs are fun too. i like to go to concerts at water street music hall and also i like going to the malls

yea they do, they have areas the college recommends, i actually have an interview friday

it really depends on the individual. I rarely went into town, since the campus is pretty self enclosed. Most of my club meetings and activities took place on campus. Next semester is actually gonna be the first, where I'll be venturing more out into city as volunteer at a local school. But I will also be a junior, so yeah. There is stuff to do downtown, just depends on how not lazy you are and willing to hop on a bus to check stuff out.
