CLA for first-choice college?

Hello everyone. I'm a pretty normal international students who's going crazy for UMN. The thing is that my profile in comparison with other competitors, especially with those from my country is not very strong. I have 1950 SAT and 83/100 GPA. I'm going to re-take the SAT this October though.
I intend to study Business and of course my dream college is Carlson but after reading the stats of many Carlson-accepted students, I don't think I can get there with my bad bad profile. One of my "senior" told me to apply to CLA for Econ and then study MBA latter. Will that work?
Anyway, here's my most important question. Will I have more opportunities to get to CLA if I list it as my 1st choice college? I mean I want Carlson to be my 1st and CLA 2nd, will that hurt my chance of getting into CLA?

I believe you’ll be considered for both Carlson and CLA, no matter which order to put them in. You also have the option to transfer into Carlson from CLA. Alternatively, you could also go to community college for a year or two and then transfer to Carlson. No matter what, you’ll need a strong GPA in order to transfer, so keep that in mind.

If possible, you also might consider taking the ACT, which is more commonly submitted by UMN applicants than the SAT. Good luck!

No. If Carlson is your top choice, put that first. You will automatically be considered for your second choice if you don’t get into your first.

It is very possible to transfer from CLA to Carlson. You will need to maintain a top GPA freshman year and take a few specific introductory courses.

I am not aware of any advantage to taking the ACT over the SAT. Both are fine, so just stick with what you are most comfortable taking.

^^This.

From Carlson’s Transfer Admission Website:

“The Carlson School of Management admits a limited number of transfer students to its program each year. Admission is competitive and is based on an overall assessment of the applicant’s background and accomplishments as presented in the application materials.”

The average gpa is 3.79 and only 53 were admitted for Fall 2011. That’s really competitive! If you are interested in obtaining a business degree, I would look into other schools that will be easier to get in because there is no guarantee you will transfer into Carlson.

Be careful though. Business majors tend to have better job prospects at the bachelor level. Business school gives you more applicable skills while economics will be more theoretical.

Here is a thread I found that talks more about this topic: http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/business-school-mba/1328432-economics-vs-business.html

Having said all of that, having an economics degree should not hinder your goal of getting an MBA.

If you are serious about transferring in, make sure you take calc and both micro and macro econ first year.

thanks everyone for helping. I’m pretty sure i gotta try my best for the SAT this Oct to pursue my UMN dream
