Clara Dickson Hall

Hello all. It's been a while since I last started a thread. Anyway, I've just been assigned to a single in Clara Dickson and I'm pretty happy with that. I (and presumably, other 14-ers who've been assigned to Dickson) would love to hear about the pros and cons of this place and anything else that a potential Dickson resident might benefit from knowing before moving in.

I found this link while sleuthing around on Facebook: http://sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/photos-ak-snc1/v274/199/26/1236870969/n1236870969_30807342_2520.jpg

It's pretty obvious where the bathrooms are but if any former resident of Dickson could identify the elevators, lounges and kitchens, that would be great.

Back in the day, a good friend of mine was an RA in Dickson. the kids on his floor seemed to get to know each other, develop good social relationships, which is all you can ask.
Asssuming nothing has changed dramatically it should be fine.

D was in Dickson last year and made some great friendships. She felt the all-singles thing made kids get out of their rooms. Maybe they were just lucky but they had a lot of fun. She wishes it could all stay in plac next year. She was at the very end of the hall because she needs her sleep! It was a little too quiet for her at the beginning of the year but really appreciated the relative peace as time wore on.
Your picture shows only half the floor. Elevator is close to lounge and they are at the very top left of you diagram. Lots of kids on her floor did group homework in the kitchen around a big table - a lot of fun!

Are the rooms carpeted?

It appears so, you can check out some pictures on one of the old Facebook groups.

Yes, they are carpeted. D used an extra little throw rug.
PS Bring a floor lamp. No overhead lighting and there is only a bolted-on lamp on the desk and a light in the (walk-in) closet.

My daughter was there freshman year. She had one of the smaller singles, but it was very nice with slanted roof. She loved it. She had a lot of friends outside of her dorm too.

I was on the top floor then called Living Learning Center. My first year I had a corner room that did not overlook the front quad. The corner rooms are very cold in winter. the girl across from me had a room disconnected from all others in a corner, called her room the “cave” because it was so cold. My final year I had a room on either side of me that also faced the quad. The room was much warmer. Back in the day, these rooms were not carpeted by some frat sold remnants. All in all, it was a great location, not too far a walk to Arts & Sciences quad, but far enuf to get away for a bit.

I stayed in Dickson over Reunions. It’s as lovely as always. Even though I was in Court freshman year I always wished I had lived in Dickson.

got a single (we put it for first choice) and he seems happy. My son is very social but I think it is good to have a quiet space to retreat too. Not to many colleges have singles so I thought it was a great option. I remember touring it with him when we went for Cornell Days. He is 3XXX . I assume maybe that is 3rd floor. Does anyone know? Also when you go to the website it says some rooms have cable access. Does anyone know how to find out or do you have to call the school? PS Which ones are “smaller” singles etc and how do you know if you face the quad? It is all so exciting.
Thanks

Although I lived in Jameson, the majority of my free time was spent in Dickson (one of the RAs considered me an honorary Dicksonite because I was there so often and didn’t mind me wandering the halls by myself, which is a bit of a no-no if you don’t live in the particular dorm you are wandering and I even participated in more floor/dorm events there than in Jameson). It’s a big place, but it’s easy to make friends and there’s so much to do there (Unlike the high-rises. >_>). The majority of my time was spent chilling with friends or doing homework in various lounges (most of which have TVs!) or borrowing games from the game room (another luxury Jameson doesn’t offer) or playing ping pong with friends. I even did my laundry there a time or two because there were so many machines to use. Very wonderful place. Congrats on being placed there.

Your son is on the third floor, but it is really the second floor. When you enter the building from the main entrance, you are actually entering the 2nd floor. In dickson, floors are divided into sides. I was in 5-5…fifth floor, five side. There is also the 6 side as well. Get used to referencing your room by that terminology! Looking at the building form the quad, five side is on the left, six on the right. The sides alternate male and female.

I enjoyed my time in dickson. It is actually nice to have your own space and since everyone is in the same situation, people do get out of their rooms. It can be noisy at times, but it was usually just fine.

One note: there are no overhead lights, just a desk lamp. So be prepared to buy or bring your own light. I got a floor light from Target.

I lived in Dickson and for me it was simply amazing.

I just graduated and some of my closest friends over the 4 years were from the people I lived with.
