Claremont McKenna for Wall Street

How does CMC fare among BB placement in NY offices? As a top liberal arts college with arguably the best econ department among LACs, I'm curious to see what opinions you all have (considering its location).

Well Henry Kravis went there, so that’s something.

@TXBanking

Kravis went straight to Columbia afterwards.

George Roberts - the other founder of KKR - also went to CMC. As did Robert Day, who created TCW before he sold it to Societe Generale for several billion. And on and on and on.

I think you don’t need to worry about CMC IB placements. Just worry about getting a 3.5 GPA.

Don’t aim for a 3.5 gpa - you will miss out on the majority of interviews. A 3.7+ is what you should be focusing on.

Bumping because I’m still curious.

I talked to some people in the finance world before applying to schools (in the end, I was accepted at Amherst and Middlebury and rejected at CMC and Pomona, go figure). So this info is from them.

In terms of liberal arts schools, Amherst and Williams are the only true “targets” for NY offices. Not only is there some on campus recruiting (albeit not as much as the big schools), but the alumni network is also incredibly strong on the east coast. CMC, Bowdoin, Middlebury, Pomona, Colgate, etc do well too. CMC and Pomona do better on west coast offices.

The problem with west coast offices is that there are very few spots compared to NYC offices. On the west coast, Pomona/CMC kids will be competing with Stanford/Berkeley as well for those few spots.

Despite this, my thinking is don’t fixate on what is a target, semi-target, etc. and focus on your GPA and extracurriculars. If you do well at any of these schools, you can make it on the street.

Yeah, I read somewhere on WSO that if NYC BB is truly your goal than you can easily get it from CMC/Pomona. Given the stereotype that CMC carries for being focused on finance, I still think that hardly any kids are truly shooting for IBD (might explain why Williams and Amherst are top dogs here).

Probably best to assume that I just gotta stay hungry. :>

But hey man, congrats on CMC. I was pretty disappointed when I was rejected ed2. The investment club there is super awesome!!! you should def join

Thanks, I already plan on it.

And likewise for Amherst/Midd. Being rejected from CMC isn’t even a drawback considering you had those great options to choose from. Both are wonderful places to build a foundation for finance careers.
