Clarify admission to BU as opposed to Harpur or SOM

This may be a very basic question, but I would like clarification from any BU student on admissions. The threads have numerous instances of students indicating they were accepted or rejected to either the SOM or Harpur, however, the BU web site, admissions etc that I have corresponded with indicate there is no separate admission to SOM from BU itself. On admission to BU, does a student simply check a major and then is placed for instance in the SOM or other appropriate school based on major?

the way it worked in the past (i have no idea if they are making any changes for this year) was that the school within BU that you were considered to be applying to was determined by the intended major you indicated. so if you marked accounting or management, you were applying to SOM. if you were undecided (or one of the liberal arts majors listed), i believe you were considered an applicant to Harpur (liberal arts college). it is possible to transfer from one school to another once you are at BU, but it can be very hard to transfer into SOM. i believe i heard that last year, they allowed applicants to indicate a second preference if they weren’t accepted to their first choice school. SOM and the Decker School of Nursing are, i believe, the two hardest to get into.

if you are admitted to harpur, you aren’t locked into a specific major - even if you indicated one on your application – you don’t formally declare until later. changing majors within the same school is relatively easy; but if you want to switch to a major in another school, it means transferring between schools and the difficulty of doing so depends on which school you are trying to transfer in to.

i don’t know what people in the admissions office have been telling you – i don’t know what exactly you’ve asked them. be very clear and specific regarding what your question is if you contact them again.

You check which school you would want to apply to on your supplement which will be sent to you via email after you submit your application

in addition, if you want to get into bu easier, apply to harpur and then you can do a transfer to the SOM program

^ I wouldn’t recommend that, it’s very difficult to transfer into SOM. When you fill out the supplement, you put down what school you’re applying to (SOM, Harpur, etc). You can also put down a second choice in case you don’t get into your first.

I just transferred to Binghamton so the application process is still fresh in my mind! When you apply, you don’t just apply to Binghamton, you apply to one of the 5 undergraduate schools within the university. You can always transfer into another school if you need to change your major but transferring within the university can sometimes be difficult. Generally, if students are undecided while applying, they apply to Harupur.
