I'm curious if anyone who applied to CHC has gotten a decision yet. Also if those accepted (or not) would be willing to post their stats. My daughter is looking at CHC (not for fall '08, but a year or so after that), and I'm curious what it takes to get an acceptance. Thanks.

GPA and SAT scores for succesful candidates are given here:

Thanks, worried_mom.

I guess, apart from the published range of scores/grades, I'm also curious how likely it is to get in even if a student is in range. The college my son will be going to, for example, has a published range, but many, many kids in that range will still not get accepted because they can only accept a limited number of students.

Giving that CHC is so small, do a lot of kids that fall in that range fail to get in, nonetheless? Does anyone know? How competitive is it?

My daughter's SAT is 740CR/670M/740WR and her SAT2s are 770 (wrld hist), 700 (math 1), and 790 (literature). Her grades are all A's, but her transcript is a little irregular because she's a homeschooler -- but she has also taken classes at the high school, the community college, and will take some at the regional OR univ. here too, so she will have plenty of "official" grades to submit as well. She'll have strong recs, and her main ECs are music-related and speech&debate. I'm wondering if her chances at CHC will be pretty good, or if we should start looking more broadly.

For financial reasons among other things, doing the honors program at OU would be her best option, but I don't know how hard it is to get accepted. Like I said, I know her stats are in range, but given that are the odds still tough as in the case of the college my son is going to?

I'm sorry but I haven't come across any specific data that would answer your questions.

The website says there were 898 applicants but only 176 entered the program, which would imply a 20% acceptance rate -- IF everyone that was accepted did enrolled. But I have to believe many of those accepted do not enroll -- because those students would, by virtue of their high grades and test scores, probably have many other schools to choose from that might be more appealing to them. So the acceptance rate has got to be much higher.

And in a way, UO is competing with itself by having two honors programs: CHC and SCS. From what I have heard, many of the science majors who are accepted into both programs opt to do only SCS as it works out better for them than CHC, which is more oriented towards liberal arts majors.

I guess the only way you can find out is to just contact CHC and ask them.

Thanks for the information, worried_mom. I agree that there is probably a significant percentage of kids accepted who choose to go elsewhere. It is interesting to know about the number of applicants overall, though, and the number that enroll.

I have also read that CHC doesn't work so well for science, math, architecture, etc. students. Even have read it's awkward for art majors. My daughter is a born English major, so hopefully it would be a good program for her. I think for her the smaller classes are really crucial, and the stimulation of other motivated students in a more human-scale enviroment.

If she could have that smaller learning environment, but the hubbub of a larger school, that might be the best of both worlds for her. Do you have a student looking at this program?

Yes, my son is a HS senior now. He applied early to UO and was accepted in December with a Dean's Scholarship (we're out-of-state), but the decision on his CHC application was deferred. The letter basically said that the number of early applicants to CHC was so small that they were waiting until they had a larger pool to see how his credentials stacked up. He's supposed to hear back from CHC this month.

Since then, he was invited to join SCS. After looking into it, he decided that SCS is probably more suitable for him anyway. He's planning on a math major and has many AP credits that cover nearly all of his Gen Ed requirements.

Right now, he's not likely to be in either program at UO though, because he's leaning towards going to Boston College (where he's already been accepted).

That's great about Boston College. It's always nice to have options, but especially great when a kid is also accepted somewhere they're specifically interested in going.

Still, when he hears back from CHC I'd be interested in hearing about it if you're open to that.

I know another kid who is doing SCS, and although I know no details about it, I have heard he is quite pleased with the program.

CHC acceptance arrived in Portland yesterday.

Great news! Even if your S is planning on Boston, it's always nice to get those acceptances!

My son received his acceptance letter from CHC today (Monday). We live in Arizona.

i just got in today.. i'm from washington

I got in too, but I think I'll be at Macalester next year.

My second daughter will be following her big sister to CHC next fall. CHC has provided a top education for D#1, so I couldn't be more pleased with D#2's acceptance and decision to attend. CHC is a great school for the money. 'rentof2: I'd say your daughter's stats look good -- her SATs are just a tad higher than either of my girls.' I do think ECs, the essay and letters of rec are also very important.

Thank you, Duckmom! A little reassurance is nice to hear. I hope my D can get in, and I'm so glad to hear your D#1 is happy with it. :)

I got in...........

Admitted to CHC, but will not attend (UCLA '12)

31 ACT
4.24 GPA
4/340 rank

unique, plentiful ECs, very solid essays; emphasized diversity

also offered 6k per year Dean's scholarship and 1.5k President's scholarship (I think that's what it was called), in case that helps also.

good luck!

D wanted to be a Duck and was accepted in CHC with WUE scholarship in 2006. Only thing that really kept her from going was Willamette offered her much more financial aid. Real tossup between the two, as different as they may seem, but she is happy where she is. We loved U of O as well. It was a really tough decision.

Just a little financial aid side note, a friend of mine was accepted to USC, UCSD, SDSU, and CHC. She received a full-ride scholarship to CHC and very little from the other schools. I'm not sure if this will really help anyone but thought I'd post to let people know :)

Wow, full ride? Scholarship? U of O's diversity building scholarship comes closest but does not include room and board. Do you happen to know the FA particulars?
