Clark Scholars 2013?

This is ridiculous.

And if I were you ^ I would go to Clark Scholars.

Just to add to this thread… How good are my chances if I made USAJMO, USAMO, and USACO silver division, but lack research experience?

Apparently research experience doesn’t really matter that much in the application process, based on what past Clarkies have told us. For example, last year there were less than half of the people in the program with prior research experience.

On the other hand, I don’t know about major awards and how much they would count in your application. Anyone else with that information?

The interesting thing about Clark application is it doesn’t even ask you to list awards/honors in the “activity” section.

I thought that was strange too. A clue as to the part of the application they value most might be in how they want three recommendations, which is more than usual for programs and colleges. So maybe if you have some really stellar teacher recommendations, you’ll fare better in the admissions process?

Agree. The rec letters are very important, and remember the form that recommenders were supposed to fill out? It wasn’t our fault if our recommender forgot to include that form!

Oh ouch, did your teacher forget to include that?

Don’t know! I hope so!?

I hope Dr. SanFran calls his 36 people next week and EVERY ONE of them says NO cus’ he was waaaaaaaaaaaaay TOO late …

36? but only 12 will be accepted, correct?
in either case, it’s late really

Maybe all 36 have been contacted already and we just don’t know about it because none of them follow this thread…

So we are sure they’re calling finalists for?!

I’m sorry wow my phone definitely went haywire on that message. I was just asking if we were sure they were gonna call finalists first haha and the exclamation point should not be there

Well we’re not completely sure but that is how they have always done it

Anyone know the importance of major awards for this program? If I have qualified for the USAMO, USAJMO, and am in the silver division of USACO, what are my chances? Any input from Clarkies?

Where did you write that in your app? It doesn’t have a place to put it, so unless you wrote about it in your essay (which I bet would be hard without sounding like listing accomplishments), they can’t decide on it. I’m in a similar situation though, so if any past scholars could help us out with this, it’d be much appreciated.

I did mention these in the essays, and unfortunately it probably did sound as if I was listing accomplishments. But I worked hard for these, and I didn’t want them to go unnoticed. I really don’t understand why they didn’t ask for achievements, especially considering that this is a “prestigious” program.

I think they’re trying to be a little bit more relaxed than RSI, which almost requires past research experience and makes you list major awards separately. Maybe they’re just trying to get kids who show a genuine love for science and who are brilliant and/or have great personalities according to their teachers.

Yea I laundry-listed too – no choice, how else can I mention the awards I worked my rear end off to earn? Any idea when Dr. SFO will release news, it has to be this week right? This program is ridiculous…

Good luck to all the applicants. I was reading posts because my child in interested in these summer programs. Did they explain why the decisions are taking so long? It seems like it is challenging because students must confirm or send in a deposit for other programs.

I believe in past years the decisions came out earlier.

Thank you for your insight. Again best wishes to all!
