I recently enrolled in a PSYC 101 course on tuesdays and thursdays (1400-1515) but there is a required discussion on that same thursday from (1800-1900) Is it normal to have discussions on the same day as the actual course or perhaps the discussion period is just used for testing? Hopefully there is somebody who can enlighten me on this b/c IMO having a required 6pm-7pm is reason enough not to take this section

It is perfectly legitimate to have a discussion on the same day as a lecture.

Now the real question is whether or not it is legitimate to completely blow off the discussion...

It isn't. Discussions and small classes should not be planned to be blown off, and it should be avoided at all costs. Unless you want to look stupid and most likely do worse in the class. Frankly, class shouldn't be blown off regularly, period, unless it's a huge lecture and you understand the material and it's a required class and attendance doesn't matter.

What exactly happens in a psychology discussion class?

...you talk about psychology. and whatever else you learned in class. And if you have questions on the material you learned, you have a chance to ask those questions.

I've only taken one Psyc class but it had a discussion very similar to the 101 set up as listed in the COD. In my case the discussion was totally optional, run by a TA basically recapping lecture. So if your class is like mine the discussion is a complete waste of time. If you are attentive in lecture you probably don't need the discussion, but I recommend emailing your professor asking about the discussion but not until you go to class the first day because he/she may explain it.

Discussion can be useless but often times its like reviewing your material for an hour so you don't need to study it later, also good help on WebWork. I'd recommend the Math Tutoring Center for anyone in MATH131/132, basically saved my grade in those horrible, horrible classes (especially since Rebbecca Schmidt is not teaching 132 anymore, may god have mercy on your souls)
