Class of '11 Theatre Decisions Thread

I recently saw a copy of “the letter” from Yale to a kid whose senioritis got out of hand. Eeech!! Unfortunately that hasn’t mitigated D’s senioritis in the slightest.

At least by mid-week next week all those darned AP exams will be history…

Son finally moved off the waitlist at U of Evansville BFA, jumped for joy and made me put down the deposit immediately. Off he goes to Indiana in 3 months or so. Glad that is over.

Congrats to your son, geektheatre! I’m glad you let him enroll at his wait list school since he seems most excited about this opportunity! Love happy endings!

Congratulations!! It must feel so great to have that resolved – especially in the desired way!!

As my other thread tells, my D had the honor of reconsidering her college choice, because of a waitlist offer from Brandeis. You can see the details there if you want - but the end result is that she continues to want to go to Adelphi and get the BFA in theatre.

Tonight she also had the honor of receiving the theatre scholarship at our HS Awards presentation. Talk about validation!

Congrats to all! It’s an exciting time!

Sorry for resurrecting this old thread but I took an extended break from CC right after decisions were made and never updated. Now that I am back I wanted to complete the historical record. ;-)

Waitlist:
Emerson

Final Decision: Muhlenberg

I could write a book on the final decision process but in a nutshell, she fell in love with Muhlenberg when she visited and on her second visit met with the head of the department and was convinced it was the right choice. It didn’t hurt that they offered her merit and talent money. If she had more BFA options she might have made a different decision because she did want the BFA experience of moving through an arc of classes with a solid cohort. But she also wanted a program that balanced strong academics with a strong theater program and her list reflects that. She really was a kid who wavered between BFA and BA right up to the end. If she had gotten into Fordham she probably would have gone there because it was her perfect hybrid.

Thanks for giving the update, LeftofPisa, and congrats to your D!

This choice is so hard on most kids, but I think even harder on some of our theatre kids who like aspects of the BFA but also want BA academics and flexibilities (double majors, other types of kids, etc). You D made an excellent choice and please hang around and keep us informed.

I don’t think I ever posted to this thread back in April, probably due to the fact that S2 is a hybrid type of kid who didn’t fit neatly into the Theatre major and applied to a few different sorts of arts-type programs (film, architecture, BFA theatre design, studio art!). But for any kids/parents coming up this year who are interested in our family’s journey, here are his results and decision:

Accepted:
Carnegie Mellon (BFA Theatre Design)
Case Western (BFA Theatre Design)
George Washington (BA)
Occidental (BA)
Tulane (BA)
UC Berkeley (BA)
UC Davis (BA)
UCLA - Theatre, Film & Television (BA by audition)
UC Santa Barbara - College of Creative Studies - Painting/Art (by portfolio review/interview)
U Miami (BA)
USC - School of Cinematic Arts (BA) and School of Theatre (BFA Theatre Design)

Rejected:
Washington U, St. Louis - Architecture

Waitlisted:
none

Final Decision:
USC - double major in Cinematic Arts BA and Theatre BA

Despite my son’s gung ho desire to study Scenic Design in a BFA program, he also was excited to get into USC’s film school and study production design and art direction, etc. In the end, he realized he could only double major if he got the theatre BA degree – due to the number of units required for a BFA, so it was a difficult choice! I will add, he was very fortunate to be given talent and merit $$ from both the film school and School of Theatre which added to the hard decision.

He decided to take two classes in each major this first semester to jump right in. So far, so great.

Your son amassed an impressive list of acceptances. He sounds like anything but a cookie-cutter kid so the double major sounds right. Congratulations to him and to you.

Thanks madbean! And its great to see your son’s final decision as well. I can’t wait to hear about his experience. And I harbor a fantasy that our kids will collaborate some day.
