After being rejected from all of my auditioned schools, (all of which are the MOST selective) I came across a new school never talked about on CC: Florida Southern College in Lakeland, Fl. It’s a beautiful school on a gorgeous lake right close to Tampa and Orlando. They have a theater performance BFA that is new and upcoming, but have had a BA for quite awhile. So I’ll be going there. Just another school for everyone to consider in the south. It is audition based, and scholarships are available. I couldn’t be happier.

Applied: BFA’s at colleges primarily in the Northeast, including CMU, Purchase, NYU, Hartt, Rutgers, Adelphi, Syracuse, Juilliard, Emerson, etc. Only a few BA’s, e.g., Hofstra, Suffolk, St. John’s University
Waitlisted: Hofstra, Suffolk
Accepted: Adelphi, SCAD, St. John’s, Hartt

Decision: HARTT!!

My D really wanted a conservatory, not a LAC, and it was difficult to persuade her to add some LACs to her list. The odds of BFA audition admissions to conservatories, along with my d’s demographics, persuaded her that she had to keep all options open.

Adelphi, despite being an LAC, was lovely (see my posts about it along with EmmyBet’s), and they have been incredibly gracious and welcoming. However, with its many gen eds, especially during freshman year, it isn’t a conservatory. And, while close to NYC, it isn’t IN the city, and it can’t really compete with the major NYC name schools (whatever that means). SCAD is just too far away for her, although we all love Savannah and have heard great things about SCAD itself. In addition to that, we’ve had surprisingly little contact from SCAD, and my d didn’t feel enticed or embraced by the school as a prospective freshman. Kinda weird, and it left her feeling a little cold, especially in contrast to Adelphi and Hartt (see below).

My D visited Hartt about ten days ago and sat in on two acting classes. She was extremely impressed with the high quality of the faculty, the classes and the students themselves. It’s a true conservatory, which is what she wants. The facilities are spanking new (she doesn’t care that they are off campus), and the atmosphere is charged with positive energy. She was also pleased with the department head’s comments to her group about the school’s faith in its students as actors and as individuals.

Also, Hartt has a very close relationship with two high-end local theatre companies (Hartford Stage and Goodspeed), where some students get equity points – and employment. Other plusses? It has a great reputation in the area, a real campus, school spirit (partly thanks to D-1 sports at U Hartford) and a diverse student body that has been incredibly welcoming. The only the school she saw that had these same elements was Syracuse VPA, which she also loved, but they didn’t “show her the love,” and Syracuse had 70 inches of snow by Thanksgiving (and more gen eds, I think, which she would have hated).

As for me, as The Mom, I’m glad Hartt’s only about 2 hours away from us, and the absence of an institutionally-mandated cut program makes me feel that my d won’t be in a killer-competitive pressure cooker that could leave her high and dry after two years and $100,000. West Hartford is also beautiful, and safe…What, the parents can’t have their own opinions about this stuff?!

the decision is final today: SMU BFA Acting

Without going into too much detail of where he applied, S started this evolution leaning one way in college preferences (as in, majoring in physics) and then decided he should shoot for the moon and audition for the top programs that also had Division I football …

So, five auditions, two acceptances and SMU it is! Go Mustangs!

YAY - congrats!!!

I should have added that he did get into 5 other schools for that other major…three of which have decent theater departments, so he did have options! But in the end, the BFA and the really awesome people at SMU – professors and students – trumped all.

Accepted: Temple U (BA), U of Pittsburgh (BA), University of Minnesota BFA (off of waitlist)
Rejected: BU, Fordham (BA)

Decision: Minnesota BFA.
Wanted intensive training but ability to pursue academic interests or another minor or major. Minnesota was my top choice by far, I am in love with the program and love it more the more I learn about it, I especially love the liberal arts component, relationship with the Guthrie, the company structure, and the year abroad. I also do think I wanted to be at a large, public university. I hope to pursue Global Studies as either a minor or second major.

emkolb, you made my day! That is so exciting to hear your good news!

Thanks SDon- made my day too. Shed some happy tears :)

Congrats to all! Especially if BU is in your future! Welcome to the family!!

UVaHoo87–heartfelt congrats to your son (and to you!) on his decision to be a Mustang!
SMU is lucky to have him and I am sure he will do well there!

Nalajen … Feeling really good about our D’s choice to pick Hartt after watching their junior company perform Henry V yesterday at “H-PAC!”

These kids just got back from their semester in London, and it was an amazing performance of one of the Bard’s best-known histories!

Wow! Congrats on all these wonderful decisions! Can’t wait to see the class of 2015 in the future. And extra congratulations to Emkolb on getting into UMinn/Guthrie! I know that has been your dream school all along and its fantastic that your dream came true.

Racroce, thanks for the post! My D is so psyched (she has her U of H sweatshirt!) - looking forward to meeting you!

Hi, all - a little off-topic, but hope you won’t mind if a proud mom tells her CC friends - D was just awarded a National Merit Scholarship to NYU.

Now, if we can just make it through the last weeks of high school…

For my D it came down to DePaul, Fordham and Boston University. DePaul was the place where she had spent the most time and although she loved the faculty she just never felt it was the right place for her. The choice between Fordham and BU was very difficult. She didn’t make a final decision until the very last minute. But in the end BU was the place where she felt the most excited. Congrats to everyone!

Guess I’ll change my CC name to “lookslikeBoston”

Congrats on all of the new announcements!

I didn’t know that NYU gave money for NMF. My daughter will be one- curious how much they give. Thanks! and congrats!!

Lorilyn - as soon as my D decided on Tisch she notified NMSQT that NYU was her “first choice school,” and she received notification about two weeks later that NYU was giving her a NM scholarship. Not a lot of money, but every bit helps!

According to the NMSQT brochure, NYU has 99 NM scholarships.

OTM - Congrats to your DD’s NM Scholarship, and decision to attend NYU Tisch (Playwright’s Horizons). You’re right - every little bit helps!

Congratulations, OneToughMommy!

Let’s hope everyone’s kids keep their eyes on the ball until graduation…I keep telling my d, it ain’t over 'til it’s over (and she has her diploma in hand)!

– Peace, love & barbecue (anyone else a Marcia Ball fan?)
