<p>Ummm... as someone who graduated from HS in '72, I would take issue with this characterization of the '70s. The '60s? Probably. The '50s? Definitely! But not '70s: that's when prevailing attitudes started changing.</p>
<p>True, mootmom. But in '74 when I told my HS GC I wanted to go to architecture school, she said women weren't allowed in architecture school and suggested we talk about boyfriends instead.</p>
<p>Rising population is an important factor, but another is that students simply apply to many more colleges than they used to; many of us can remember when 1-3 applications per person was the norm. Now it seems like, what, 6-10?</p>
