Class of 2011

I'm going too! Still need to find a way to get upwards of $10,000...but heck, I'll find a way. I can't wait!

YAY! EbolaZaire, I wonder how I'm going to find you at orientatino hahaha.

jayhawk -- I am curious; where did you get those statistics?

"tulanes act scores this year were 29-33, which were the highest in the south this year in 2007, only 1 pt behind dukes 29-34"

CT dad is right. We won't know anything till after May1st, and I will let you all know when we have that information. No schools know yet, so sit tight and we will let you know. As far as all those negative things some are saying about Tulane, it sounds like those are a lot of inaccurate rumors.

The 9th Ward- has gotten a lot of media attention over the last 20 months. The 9th Ward is at the beginning of its recovery process, there is no doubt about that. It will be a long struggle to get things back to normal there. However, the 9th Ward is 11 miles from our campus. We send students there every week for Habitat for Humanity Projects, Common Ground relief efforts, and tons of other volunteer opportunities. We are proud of the role Tulane students are playing in the recovery of these parts of the city.

The news- likes to focus on the bad things. There are so many amazing stories coming out of New Orleans right now, but the media focus is more on the negative things. New Orleans is really a place that you must come down and experience for yourself. I would hope that anyone interested will come down, and not base their decision on a few select news reports. I can almost guarantee you will be very happy with what you see going on down here.

Attracting accepted students- is something that has not been a problem for us this year. During the Destination Tulane program over the last three and a half weeks, we have welcomed over 2,000 visitors to our campus. Our deposits are steadily coming in as well. We are very excited for the class of 2011 and can’t wait to see how they shape up and see if we reach our goal of 1200-1400. We admitted 40% of the students who applied, and of those admitted students; roughly 65% were in the top 10% of their class.

Our “respect” – Personally, I feel that there are few schools in this nation that do not respect Tulane. We have successfully recovered from one of the worst natural disasters in our nation’s history, and done so as a stronger, smarter and better institution. I am not sure who has lost respect for Tulane, but that is not the sense that I have gotten at all. In fact, I have seen quite the opposite. Tulane flew in over 290 high school college and guidance counselors this past year, and all left with an even greater sense of admiration for our school. We have since created four new majors (Engineering Physics, Urban Studies, Entrepreneurship, Social Policy and Practice) in reaction to the opportunities in New Orleans right now. We have welcomed amazing speakers to campus (Colin Powell, Al Gore, Janet Reno, Michael Lewis, Toni Morrison, James Carvell… all in the last month!). Sure, I am bias. I love this school. But I feel that Tulane is more respected and better than it has ever been.

Bottom line, if you come down for a visit and this is the place for you and you feel in your heart that this is where you belong, then come. If not, you simply must attend the school where you fit in the best. That is the most important thing. If you fit in here, that is excellent. If not, that is good too. I certainly hope that you do what you feel is best.

Thanks for everyone support thus far, I am so excited for everyone who will be joining us in August! I will let you know after May 1st how our class is shaping up.

the acceptance rate went up this year to 40% from last years 38%?

There have been a lot of extra people on campus lately. The tours have been getting bigger and I am seeing 4-6 a day at times. I counted 6 on monday I think on the way to class.

Tulane Jeff,

I've been in contact with my admissions counselor fairly consistantly for the past few months since I submitted my application. This past month, though, I've sent him three e-mails that have gone unanswered. Do we no longer have an admissions counselor once we register?

Just wondering...

No, you have an admission counselor the whole time. Send me an e-mail at jschiffm@tulane.edu and I will get you in touch with your counselor, or I will answer any questions for you. Sorry for the unanswered e-mails!

Jeff

By the way, anyone can get in touch with their personal admission counselor at http://www.tulane.edu/~admiss/staff/counselors.html.

Here is an article on some new faculty members who will be joining us at Tulane this year. http://www.neworleanscitybusiness.com/viewStory.cfm?recID=19677
