We just came back from orientation for my son, a member of class of 2012. Here's some class stats for those calibrating their chances:

1395 students, 30% women 70% men
Median SAT range: 1250-1430 (25-75 percentiles)
103 students had perfect verbal or math SAT
893 in top 10% of graduating class (64%)
391 from outside NorthEast
100% growth in international students
and 150 students from under represented groups.

There's also more non engineers, in particular bio-tech majors, so the engineering school would be more competitive since it is a smaller %.

I heard the % that are RPI medalists but can't find it. I think it is around 24%.

The dorms are maxed out, 100% occupancy. Barton is 100% triples, as is BARH. The others have a few triples, mainly doubles.

One person told us the mechanical engineering department is the most selective since it is the largest and they are trying to maintain balance.

When you say that there are triples, are these forced triples (ie triples using a double sized room) or true triples.

What were the average GPA's.

The triples were all rooms designed to be triples from what we heard. They had been doubles in less crowded years. Barton is the newest Freshman dorm and often hardest to get into. We were told if we want Barton, put down a triple as a first choice and he got it. A triple in Barton with a shared bath is the most expensive housing choice for freshmen, and a triple with a hall bath is less. The residence life website has all this information.

I don't think they gave GPA information. That varies so much from school to school that class rank is more meaningful. The schools is definitely getting more competitive.

My husband and I, both highly educated engineers, were impressed with what we saw at RPI. It seems like a good size for engineering school, they can do things bigger schools can't do, like have a good orientation program.

"One person told us the mechanical engineering department is the most selective since it is the largest and they are trying to maintain balance."

As far as I know, admissions aren't done by major. I believe each school (engineering, science, IT, business, etc) does admissions itself, without regards to major (with a few exceptions for accelerated and interdisciplinary programs).
