Just got accepted - advice on best dorm

So excited - just got accepted to RPI. EMAC major. Any advice on the best dorm? Heard that Barton is the nicest but anti-social. Most freshmen on Freshman Hill? Is that the best place to meet people?

You don't get to pick which dorm, you fill out a questionnaire and they select for you I think

RPI will send you a form with a list of the dorms freshmen can live in. You will be able to indicate your order of preference as far as the dorms go. I believe RPI will try to accomodate your wishes depending on availability- a lot of kids request Barton because it is newest etc but the rooms are arranged in suite hallways so it is not as easy to get to know other kids in your dorm when compared to getting a room in the older Freshman Hill dorms like Cary, Bray, Nason, Hall etc. The rooms in those dorms are arranged along long hallways and kids tend to leave their doors open and its easier to meet others on your hall. My son (now a junior) lived in Bray his freshman year and is still very close to his friends from Bray even though they are a bit scattered in upperclassman dorms this year. He was glad he chose one of the older dorms because he found it easy to meet people because of the room arrangement. His dorm had an intramural soccer team and ice hockey team etc.

I stand corrected! lol

My son loves Barton, is on a coed hall, and it is very social. The only way to get into Barton this year was to put triples as a high priority. Barton and BAR-H are both pretty much all triples this year. (RPI overaccepted?) In years past, they were more doubles though theoretically designed for triples.

We were next to a room with a vacuum going and couldn't hear the vacuum at all. Bottom line is that you can be happy in any dorm. And you all eat in the same dining area.

Note: Barton is considered less social than the other freshman-only dorms.

From my experience (back when we had doubles there), it probably really is. It might have changed since rooms were tripled up.

barton is now very social because of the triples, I live in it and I am a social person and I have no problems meeting people. People get out meet people and hang out in each other's rooms, plus you get all of the fancy amenities like a effective thermostat, big room etc.

Barton is the nicest..socially it's good too.
ptpatil what floor do you live on?

yeah, after skimming it seems like you got good advice..

anywhere on freshman hill you will be closest to people you meet... also,
I dont think Barton is any less social.

The least social is definitely the quad. Its mostly upperclass, and relatively few freshmen. However, the quad is nice because its super close to everything, and maybe a little bit quieter because there are less people on each floor. Despite being really old, it does have A/C, which many people arn't aware of. Its a nice perk and makes up a little for being so old.

i live on the second floor =)

I live in Crockett which is one of the "Freshman 5" (Crockett, Nason, Cary, Hall, Bray) which are all exactly the same as jdasmom said. The atmosphere is nice, but I have also been to Barton multiple times and it definitely did not seem less social. The reason why Barton is all triples this year is because a lot more people applied than before for the class of 2012, so therefore it is larger than the previous classes.

As for the other two, BAR-H is far (even though it has it's own small dining hall), and Quad is close but may not be as social due to layout/small percentage of freshmen.

Your best bet if you can visit is to go see the dorms and choose which one seems the best to you.

Accepted already? Under early decision? I thought they didn't release decisions until March.

Early decision I got their results December 5th, Early Decision II get their results January 16th, regular decision gets there in early March
