*Class of 2013* College list?

UChicago
WUSTL
Rice
Carleton
Hendrix
UNC-CH

However, my mom has said I’ll attend Duke since conception.

Tufts is my dream school

But I’ll probably end up going to one of these:
Boston University
New York University
UMass Amherst

I’m mostly interested in the first two.

^just a li’l FYI for you guys: UMass Am[h]erst has MAZING food [which is especially good if you’re a fatty w/ great metabolism like me ;)]

Colleges will use their own weighting scale to calculate your GPA. They use that for admission.

Speaking of colleges re-weighting GPA, does anyone know if Ivies and other top colleges weight GPA? Or will they simply recalculate an unweighted GPA, minus electives?

My school does not weight GPA OR rank (which I actually like, mostly) so the whole process is very interesting to me…

I’m pretty sure they do. Because after all, they might have applicants who take Honors core classes while other applicants take AP core classes. It’d be unfair for them to unweight the GPA in that case.

Oh ok. My school has a weighted Gpa system. We have 3 phases (3,4 and 5). Phase 3 classes have no weight, phase 4 classes are considered honors and have .1 weight, phase 5 classes are considered High-honors and have .2 weight. Ap classes are phase 6 and they have a weight of .3 .

Correct me if I’m wrong, but I believe colleges consider everything (GPA and rigor) in the context of your school. For example, Kid A’s school only offers honors courses, which he takes; his guidance counselor checks off ‘most rigorous’. Kid B’s school offers APs, of which he takes many; his guidance counselor also checks off ‘most rigorous’. Assuming they had similar ranks (which provides more context for your GPA), they would be considered in the same light. Note: A school that does not rank will not hurt.

I also think they recalculate unweighted GPA. From what I know, it’s a pretty fair process.

Yes, definitely. Unfortunately, at my school, some seniors take 6-7 AP’s (we have school wide study hall for one period, no getting out of it or I’m sure some would take more). Since I’m doing Yearbook and Newspaper, I can’t possibly take that many…but whatever. I’ll probably be one below “most rigorous,” whatever that is.

Who wants to take 7 AP’s anyway? shudders

Yeah, so it’d be unfair if colleges don’t recalculate GPA because at schools such as mine the weight for honors is .25 and the weight for AP is .5.

Yup, exactly. Do you guys have any goals for sophomore year?

^ Get my rank and GPA way up, score 2300+ on the SAT, join some new clubs

damn. I seem like such an underachiever compared to the other kids at cc. I need confidence in myself…

^^ You’re going to take the SAT as a sophomore? :/

no, I’m not.

Yeah, why not? I’d rather take it in the spring of sophomore year than the spring of junior year when I’d be busy studying for AP tests and working my butt off for super-killer grades. I’d prefer to just get it out of the way.

GWU
Bates
Lehigh
Bucknell
American
Union
BC
Skidmore
BU
Fordham

Note: I go to high school on the amazing campus of Fordham University, and i feel bad that almost every kid from my high school gets accepted there, some applicants who really wanted it should get those spots, its an amazing school.

Just so you know, I took the SATs the same week I took the APs and I didn’t have a problem. Then again, I don’t stress about testing.

I didn’t think about colleges until junior year

The last thing on my mind the summer after freshman year was college.

Seriously guys, enjoy high school.

Get straight A’s, do well on the PSAT (which obviously doesn’t count for NM this time around, but I figure practice can’t hurt), and beast in Extemp/LD and Quiz Bowl.

I do enjoy high school. In fact, I’m looking forward to school starting again. But that may be because I’m suffering from FWS (Forensics Withdrawl Syndrome)…
