UTA is definitely one of my top choices for BME. Unfortunately, I've heard that its BME program is extremely competitive, which greatly worries me. My ACT is a composite 34 (34 on all except Science (33)), but my ranking is barely in the top 10% (99.4545 weighted GPA). Other than choir and speech, I've only taken AP/Pre-AP classes and have done relatively well in most (mostly A's except English). I'm taking both Calc AB/BC and Physics C this year. My senior grades would drastically improve my rank, but I've heard that UTA doesn't factor in senior grades when making admission decisions. Not sure if this would help, but I've received 5's on all three AP exams that I've taken. I'm also heavily involved in choir as well as with service projects (150 hours total during high school). Are my chances good?

hi. My son was admitted to biomedical engineering class of 2012. His stats were similar to yours…he had ACT of 35 with a perfect math score and was barely in top 10%. I recommend putting anything that you have done related to math or science on your resume…he participated in UIL science competitions and he shadowed a doctor and computer scientist…had some research associated with those opportunities. He also did essay C and wrote about why he wanted to study engineering.

I also have a daughter who is a senior in engineering at UT. I noticed a shift in who was admitted to Cockrell in this last class. My S would not have been admitted her year because they considered class rank so heavily. He was not an auto admit. Admissions seemed to center on math scores and math/science classes taken this last spring. I think this has much to do with pushing that four year graduation rate. They chose quite a few students at my S’s highschool who were not auto admits for engineering. All were in Calc BC or multivariable calc senior year and took Physics and Chemistry AP. My son also took Biology AP which is good for biomedical engineering. They all had near perfect ACT/SAT scores in math.

All this being said…my son chose A&M and is very happy there! He does admit however that the biomed engineering freshman class has many many students who will not make it through. A&M has more of weed-out mentality whereas UT is highly selective from the start. Both have excellent programs from what I’m witnessing.
Best of Luck!!!
