***Class of 2014 NMSF Qualifying scores***

Wow, I didn’t realize this was happening yet! I haven’t gotten anything, but I have a 226 in vt, so I probably will, right?

Just joined the forum…finding it very helpful. I’m sorry if this was answered, but why look at the 2007 results? Is it because there were approximately the same number of test-takers? Very close for Louisiana.

Thanks!

LoveArtForever- You should have 9 or 10 points to spare

Well mail has come here in Texas…nuthin

226 in VT will make it - congrats

The commended commended score this year is 203 - that is the highest it has been since the class of 2007. So it makes sense to consider the cutoff scores from that year. Last year the commended cutoff was 200 and the prior year it was 202. Cutoff scores will go up this year - likely back up to or higher than 2 years ago. So, look at your states cutoff scores from 2 years ago and the class of 2007 and that will give you a good guess for this year. Not an exact science. The number of test takers does not matter

I think the cutoff for CA will be high this year. I just checked the number of juniors who got more than 70 (actual score, highest is 80) for Critical Reading in 2008, 2010 and 2012. The numbers [juniors] are 5738, 5596, and 8381, respectively. There is a huge jump. I am guessing this correlates with the cut off score.

I am wondering now if a 216 will not be good enough in Ohio. Kinda feeling deflated at this moment. I wonder if the Ohio score will be 217 or higher…

We homeschool. No news in OKC today.

Keep the faith, Suzysmom. I think they are just trying to break us with all this waiting. ;)

Yay thanks! :)

I looked at the link that Ijmom posted and now I’m worried. There were big jumps in the higher scores in Colorado, too.

I think the cutoffs for most states will be the same as those of the last year since the lowest 99% index (211) did not change, which affects NMSF. It is true that there are more 70 above scorers in individual sections, it is the combination (distribution) of the scores that determines the overall index.

FLparent14, unfortunately, I am not sure that we know the lowest 99% index. NM changed their reporting this year and what they show is LAST year’s index not the index for 2012 test takers.

Does everybody above the commended score get a top scorer letter sent to their high school? My school didn’t receive a letter and I was 15 points above what was needed. Did the schools have to send anything in? Because if so, I’m sure nobody at my school did they have no clue about anything. I’m also worried that I might not receive a semi finalist notification even though I was 18 points above the previous cut off.

Suzysmom, DS is sitting at the same score in Ohio and the suspense is killing me!

Xxali1096xX, our school didn’t notify anyone…when what the handbook stated didn’t happen…and we knew DS had a high enough score to warrant double checking…we did a search and found this forum. Well worth the anxiety of not knowing for a bit. The HS said they never notify anyone until they’re chosen by NM…have no idea why…sports teams make the news and announcements all the time for qualifying rounds…but that’s my own grumbling.

Everyone calm down.

To summarize:

Students that make NMSF are notified via their SCHOOLS. The list of NMSF’s were mailed to schools on Tuesday. Schools should let you know soon, but the date for which the names are released to the press is Sept 11th, so either way you won’t have to wait too much longer…

If you didn’y make the state cutoff, you would then be “Commended” - and those notifications (and a nice certificate!) are mailed directly to the STUDENTS in late September.

Any questions you have will most likely be addressed in the FAQ sticky thread at the top of this forum!

Patience… :)

Seems odd that with letters having gone out Tuesday, not a single person -even homeschoolers have received them - enen home schoolers in National Merit’s home count and state.

I can so do without this kind of tension. I’m too old for this!!! :p

So the schools should have already gotten the notifications?

^ Non profit US mail was floated as a reason as to why so slow.

Another possibility is that they may stagger the mailings (sending far-flung first then near later) so that theywould all arrive on the same day - theoretically of course :)
