They tally up to quite a lot, at least here in India

Hey, if I can overcome my fear of fratty places enough to apply to Vandy, Ohio Wesleyan shouldn’t faze me.

Fair enough. Oberlin’s probably gonna be my only connection to Ohio this December.

Oh something many need to know…one of the biggest mistakes I made was applying to Vandy: that place has NO aid for internationals!

And yes, Williams was my top priority…until, well, until they rejected me :)

If I didn’t have to rule out every place that is stingy with aid I’d have so many more options. Sigh. You’re lucky, tetris.

Thanks Flibb. I guess Vandy’s off the list then.

Vandy doesn’t offer even merit scholarships?

Quasi, check out the thread whose link I posted. It has some pretty darn helpful stats.

Yeah, financial aid is a problem for me as well… You could go another tier lower though, and look for colleges that certainly will grant you some merit aid (like Knox College etc.)…
But I think I’d rather stay at home, and go to uni here than go to a not-so-good US college though!

Btw, what you guys might want to look into, if your main priority is studying abroad and not necessarily in the US, are the University Colleges here in the Netherlands, they are relatively new (the oldest is only 5 years old), but the success is pretty big, the first alumni are already off to grad schools at Harvard, Oxford, Cambridge… In essence, it are little LACs in the Netherlands (all the courses are in English) with an international emphasis… They are my ubersafeties, but finance-wise, they are quite interesting: students from outside the European Union pay 6500 (appr. $9000) a year (tuition, board (i’m not completely sure about that though) etc.) and inside Europe pay only 2000 dollars a year.

The two oldest are located in Utrecht ([University College Utrecht - Welcome to University College Utrecht](http://www.ucu.uu.nl/)), a city near Amsterdam, and in Middelburg ([Roosevelt Academy Middelburg - Roosevelt Academy](http://www.roac.nl/roac/)) which is basically in the middle of nowhere.
Amsterdam, Tilburg and Maastricht are starting one this year.

They are affiliated to the other universities in the Netherlands, and are state-funded. Amsterdam is really pumping billions of dollars in the project, because they want their own ‘Harvard at the Amstel’ (Don’t ask me!).

Gaining admission as an international is REALLY EASY! Because no internationals apply, and they want a ‘vibrant, diverse community’, which till date consists for 80 percent of Dutch students…

It wouldn’t be my first choice to go there, but it’s always an option as some sort of giant safety!

Hmmm, interesting! Do you get a broad-based liberal arts educaiton at these places?

Yeah! It’s basically like a LAC, and you’ll get a liberal arts education. The variety of courses might be smaller than at American LACs though, because the Dutch ones are so small (Middelburg only has 200 students!). An advantage is, that classes only have 20 students tops. It’s a really personal experience I think.

Hmmm OK. Definitely interesting. But Europe’s out for me, my parents need me to be near relatives while I study. Typically overprotective Indians…

Hahaha! My parents would prefer if I went to the UK (closer to home), but I want to go to the US haha. I want to leave Europe though (mainland Europe). I’ve seen enough of it.

I want to experience American culture shock, lol.

So what are your top choices, apart from Harvard?

But is English the medium of instruction? That actually sounds really interesting, living in Europe.

tetris I can’t access the files in the FA thread.

Yeah, only english! There are quite a lot International students btw, when I visited Utrecht a girl from Israel and a guy from Venezuela showed me around, for example!

My other top choices are pretty much Harvard, University of Chicago (Though no aid >_>), Princeton, Columbia and Yale! Yours?

Brown, Yale, Princeton.

Dang Utretcht won’t admit Indian students before they complete a year of university.

UChi gives merit aid, Guilty. So does Vandy.

@Quasi: You have to download the files.

@QuasiProfound: Yeah, I know Chicago gives some aid, but REALLY little (only 1 percent or something around that number of the internationals receives aid…)

You could self-study for some APs though! If you take 4 APs, you’re eligible to apply to UCU!

@Tetrisfan: Princeton, Yale <3, I like Brown too, but I never really looked into the school so far… I like Rhode Island though! I am not really sure if their economics department is that good, thats basically the only problem that I know of so far… Nice list! No H-love from you, I see! Well, less competition for me! haha!

PS. I’m sorry about my horrendous English btw.

Your English is just fine!

Brown rocks at everything. No, I swear. So their economics department can’t be too shoddy.

Haha, I’m not a big H fan. My parents want me to apply though
