Class of 2016 admissions?

Hello,

My name is DeVonte, and I will be a senior in high school in the fall. I go to school in Chicago, Illinois. I got a 24 on the ACT, and my unweighted GPA is around 3.3. I hear because I am not from California it is going to be extremely hard to get into UCLA. I was wondering if there are any tips there are for me to be accepted. I play 5 sports, and I am in the National Honors Society. Also, I have around 60 community service learning hours, and I plan on getting to at least 100. If there is any information that will help my chances into being accepted, can anybody please let me know. Thanks :)

You definitely need to get your gpa up and your act up. Getting accepted out of state is already pretty difficult, and UCLA seems to be a far reach for you.

The UC system as a whole seems to be increasing the percentage of out of state students accepted, so hopefully that will work to your advantage.

Your GPA is weak, but there isn’t much you can do about it now. You should study hard for the ACT this summer and take it twice this fall. It’s definitely gonna be tough, but if you write some really good essays you might have a chance.

As previous posters stated, you need to drive that GPA up. That ACT score needs some work too. You might want to try the SAT instead.

Do not worry! I was in your shoes 1 year ago today, and I was accepted!

I had a 24 on my ACT, a 3.7 gpa, out of state, and was really involved and stuff. I will tell you what I did!

ACT: I took ACT classes, and read ACT books, surprise, they work! (To an extent) There are tricks to taking the exams you can learn that will help you. I retook it and got a 26, then retook it and got a 27. I guess that was good enough. (We also had to submit SAT 2 Subject exams, but I think last year was the last year. I failed them, and was still accepted. Proof that it is possible!)

GPA: A 3.3 is low. Your submitted gpa wont change from now, cuz the application deadline is before your semester grades. Sorry, but hopefully you took weighted classes and have over a 4.0. My weighted GPA was a 4.4. Work on other areas.

Community service: You need way more than 100 buddy. Thats weak. Shoot for 300 for them to even make a difference. I had about 500 logged. I started my own nonprofit organization.

Essays: SUPER IMPORTANT! Write about something meaningful. If the you make a connection to the reader, they are gonna accept you. Find a story about how you over came something difficult in your life, and add imagery so that the reader feels the pain in your words. I wrote about some family problems and added a lot of emotion to show what a strong person AND writer I am. Honestly, my essays are most likely the reason I was accepted.

Extracurriculars: HAVE MORE! 5 sports is way to athletically weighted. Unless you’re planning on playing a varsity sport for them, this isnt too persuading. NHS is okay, but you need to be an officer. Shows you are more than involved. For example, I was Student Body President, President of Red Cross Club, VP of Science Club, AND I coached Martial Arts as a black belt. Talk about how you are a leader in your sports AND clubs. UCLA pays attention to this, I promise.

GOOD LUCK! Respond on here if you have any questions! I was in your shoes and felt hopeless, but I am proof that it is possible! You gatta make senior year count!

i live in california is it’s very true that they are more open to out of state applicants because the financial issues here are just terrible! and just a note, many of my friends who are going to UCLA and UCSD have been complaining about not being able to get all the classes they wanted. best of luck! :)

Unfortunately for you, the UC’s, especially LA and Berkeley, place great weight on your academics. That means you need to have a strong GPA and SAT/ACT score to get in. The average UCLA student for class of 2015 has a UC GPA of 4.4 and an SAT score of 2030 (which converts to a 31 on the ACT). So that means you’re quite below on both. To be honest I think your chances of getting in are slim. And this is coming from a freshman currently at UCLA. Maybe if you bring your GPA up to a 3.7 and work on getting your ACT score to a 29 or 30 you will have a slightly better chance. Best of luck though!
