As a junior, I want to know if I'm on the right track. I know I need to retake the ACT and take the SAT's but is there any other flaws?

Sounds like you are preparing yourself well to be a competitive applicant. As an out-of-state student, remember that W&M is even more selective (about a 27% admission rate) so we would encourage you to stay the course, complete your IB diploma (which is an academic program we think very highly of) and continue to maintain strong grades (primarily As). Also, continue to pursue leadership roles in your clubs and organizations like you already are. While it’s certainly impressive when students obtain leadership roles, it’s even more impressive when they hold those positions for multiple years.

Remember, that W&M only considers your best score so if you take the ACT again and do better, we’ll only consider you, better score. If you also take the SAT, we’ll consider only whichever score is highest. The middle 50% of our out-of-state students score between a 1380 and 1420 (Critical Reading + Math) or between a 31 and 32. Standardized testing is simply one part of our process, no more than that and no less than that.

You can also consider visiting campus this summer and participating in an on-campus interview ([William & Mary - Summer Interviews](http://www.wm.edu/admission/interview)). It’s a way you can actually put your personality into your application.

Remember, because W&M uses holistic review, every applicant has a chance of being admitted and every application is reviewed in full, at least twice. For more on any applicant’s chances, check out our Admit It! Blog ([W&M Blogs Chance Me](http://blogs.wm.edu/2010/12/14/chance-me/))

Wow! Thank You for the thorough answer. I hope to visit W&M this summer with my parents. I am also expecting to get a 30+ ACT grade with tutoring help. Thanks again.

Your GPA is right where it should be. Admission is harder for OOS students, so keep your grades up and do the best you can on the SAT or ACT.

If you are planning to visit W&M, know that they don’t track interest in the school. No matter how many times you visit the campus, that won’t necessarily help your chance of admission. If you are going to visit, I suggest you schedule an interview, as that would influence the decision!

Alright, Thank You!

YuppitTales, is correct. We don’t track interest but I suggested an interview because it is an optional component of the application and one’s that designed to let us get to know you (and for you to get to know W&M) on a more one-to-one basis than a tour allows. If you choose to interview this summer, you can also do an info session and tour the same morning or afternoon.

You can register for an interview online ([William & Mary - Summer Interviews](http://www.wm.edu/admission/interview)) beginning May 1.

You can also consider trying the SAT instead of re-taking the ACT (or do both). If you’re not a science person, you may find you do better on the SAT since it doesn’t have a science section. Studies how that about 1/3 of people do better on the ACT, 1/3 do better on the SAT and 1/3 perform the same.
